PC GURU (Hungarian magazine) on Crysis 2 **spoilers ahead**

Post » Fri Jun 03, 2011 4:32 am

I just received this month's PC guru so I thought I would share what the magazine wrote about Crysis 2. Obviously I won't translate the 4 for pages from there but I'll mention some of the major things written in the magazine: **spoilers ahead**

A deadly nano-virus called the Manhattan disease is killing the general population.
Our squad's objective in the beginning of the game is to get Crynet's recognized nano technician Dr. Nathan Gould but things don't go as planned...
Prophet saves us - the player (Alcatraz) - and this is when we get our nanosuit.
Crynet wants to get a hold of the nanosuit.
There are 19 levels in the single player mode.

As Crytek mentioned it's a half-sandbox game: the levels are basically linear but almost every one of them takes place in a wide open area although approaching them is always on a fixed path.
The controls are a bit consolish because of the cover system but it's very well-tuned for the game.
We can modify our nanosuit on the go – less energy consumption, silenced steps, stronger armor - after getting the aliens’ nano-samples.
We can modify our weapons as well but only after we get a weapon with those certain attachments we want to use.

Crysis 2 looks brutally good on the PC.
Playing on a PC with Core i5 750, 4 gb RAM, HD5770 the game on maximum settings with DX9 didn’t go under 35 fps on the press version and Crytek said they are going to optimize it even more for the final version.
The interior design look dreary but 90% of the game takes place outside.
The AI is although good, has its share of problems sometimes: sometimes they attack their own team members, our team members have problems finding their own path and bigger enemies tend to stuck in smaller debris.
Sounds of the aliens and the weapons are very good but the music is featureless and the acting is mixed.
The game itself at the end got a grade of 95% from the magazine which consists of 98% for graphics, 85% for sound and music, and 98% for the gameplay.

If any of you have any questions regarding the things I wrote here or sth else which might be in the magazine, feel free to ask me here. :)

"I also have some reservatios with the AI and the sounds. The prior although is doing good most of the time (uses the covers superbly, tries to flank you, and can open fire blindly if it knows you are invisible), is sometimes fond of attacking its fellow soldiers, our allies are painfully rigged and their path-finding is not perfect as well, and bigger enemies tend to stuck in the smallest of debris - although this last one could be easily fixed until the game's release."

only this is written about the AI

ooh and btw there's a picture in the magazine with small weird alien bug things which I have never seen before :D

+ you can download the cover for the magazine http://www.pcguru.hu/pcguru/galery_popup.php?img_id=113617 here in high def (from the official website)

That is some of the best music in a game ever, period. On top of that, we already have an announcement up about Hans Zimmer being on board with the music. This guy is just blowing smoke out of his arse.

Well, this is actually a thing I don't agree with him either, but I guess it depends on the person's taste in music so I respect his opinion.

Btw he also says that he didn't like the first Crysis and only played the first 3 levels of that game but on the other hand he speaks very-very highly of this second installment even mentioning I quote (/translate :P) :

"I don't like to make judgments too quickly but after playing Crysis 2 for about 9 hours I would venture to say it after all: Crytek's newest FPS can be easily 2011's best action game."

Now do you like him? ;)

No. If he gets something like that so wrong, I also question what else he might have gotten wrong. It's precisely why I questioned the GameReactor review. 9/10, sure, but "weak story"? Yeah, Richard Morgan begs to differ. I respect his work more than I respect an amateur "journalists'".

If you get something like that wrong, everything else is irrelevant anyway. Although, music is a slightly different matter, that's true. Still, a good reviewer would be able to look past their own preferences in such regards.

I don't blame you and you should make your own judgment when you play it, but I agree with the reviewer, the story was not that great. It was an improvement over Crysis 1, but still not amazing.

The Ceph (aliens) made the virus. So they could just go in and kill everyone when most of us were dead.

*********SPOILERS*************************

It's implied that they lived on this planet long before us, have come back and view up as "un-invited guests." Like a cockroach infestation. AND that they buried structures underground a long time ago that they are un-earthing to use against us....basically the same thing that happened in Speilberg's crap-tacular War of the Worlds remake.

"… and since then the world has changed a lot: the aliens that were found on the island crushed the American forces stationed there with ease and then started expanding throughout our planet. Their expansion is followed by a series of natural cataclysms, Earth’s armies suffer defeat after defeat and panic starts to slowly overcome the civil population. This is not the last step in the collapse of our society, but a deadly nanovirus: the (possibly alien originated) Manhattan disease consumes the once bustling New York within a few months, the streets become depopulated, and soon the army and the Crynet company’s mercenaries take the place of the authorities who are failing in the evacuation. This is when we step in…"

Btw one of the trailers at least also show a quarantine + if you played with the demo, there was a secret hiding spot on the pier level with some stuff written on the walls, a mattress, and a radio if I remember correctly. ;)

Sorry, there were too many things in that remake that did not make sense that it was just not enjoyable. Plus, I get annoyed whenever any kind of remake comes into existence.

You're welcome. Though I never heard or saw anyone of anything in the game that said they aliens (Ceph) were breaking us down for consumption. The only character in the game that I heard address the issue implied that the virus that breaks us down is just a really efficient solution of what to do with all the corpses.
