Nvidia GTX 580 - Extreme GPU Load Normal for C2 ?

Post » Sun Jan 30, 2011 7:00 pm

Hello everybody

I played the single player campaign for 2 days now and must say i am surprised about Crysis 2 being the new Furmark.

Is it really normal that my GTX 580 is at 90-99% load nearly the entire time i am running the Game ?
I thought it is way less demanding than Crysis 1 although i never got more than 30-40 FPS in C1 on the same PC.

Here are 2 Screenshots, it looks like one GTX 580 can not max out the game at 60 FPS:

Anybody else with a 580 has the same extreme GPU load ?

Thanks in advance and best regards.

These are my specs

Koolance PC4-1036BK Liquid Cooled Aluminum Full Tower Case (Upgraded to displace 1320watt of heat) - Koolance 360 ver 1.2 CPU Water Block - PrimoChill ICE Non-Conductive Fluid - Asus P6X58D Premium - Intel I7 950 - Evga GTX580 FTW Hydro Copper 2 x2 for SLI - ENERMAX GALAXY 1000W - Corsair Dominator 6 GB PC3-12800 XMP - Creative XFI Gamer - Klipsch 5.1 THX Cert Speakers - Pulsewave's Pulsar SX PC Gaming Headphones - Sata II WD 250gig, 2TB, 320gig & 1TB - Cyborg RAT 9 Wireless Mouse - Logitech G19 Keyboard - Logitech G13 Gameboard - Samsung Syncmaster PX2370 Monitor

Unfortunately the game does not use SLI as of yet so I can't say if this will change when that happens but my one 580 is running at around 99% load but my temp isn't going 43c which is normal for many games for me. The only games that push it the highest which is 54c are ones that use DX11 and same with benchmark programs.

Which program are you using to get that overlay btw? I used GPUz updating while in the background to get my info btw.

I think its sorta like Starcraft 2, it doesn't matter if you get 30fps or 300fps, the video card is still going to work as fast as it can to process those textures and what not as long as you don't have any other bottlenecks in the system that makes the gpu wait. Alot of people were complaining about really high temps on Starcraft 2 even though it does not look anything near as detailed as a Crysis game.

I get 60 average with one 580, SLI doesn't work, so my second 580 just idles. Yay!

Thanks for the reply

I'm using MSI Afterburner 2.1.0 to show GPU Temp, Load and FPS.

My detailed PC specs:

Asus P8P67 Pro
Intel i5 2500k @4,4Ghz
DDR3-1600 2x 4GB
Nvidia GTX 580

Windows 7 x64 HP Up to Date
Latest Nvidia WHQL 266.58

Game settings are like on the Screenshots:

Fullscreen
1920x1200
VSync On
Extreme

I guess FPS drops down to the upper 40's are normal then, time for 2nd 580 ;)

Yea i can just stare at a wall with nothing graphic intensive around and its still at 99% load.

SLI does work if you go and install the EVGA SLI Enhancement pack.

I get minimum 70FPS and max of 170 (206 in an elevator lol) with my 2 570's. (Extreme @ 1920x1080, 267.24 beta drivers)

Whether you are a victim of the flicker or not, is anybodies guess.

Erm, I am on a GTX580 as well, and with ALL settings set to max (and then some) with the tweak utility, my FPS rarely drops below 80+, so I honestly have no idea how you are getting such low FPS on a comparable system :(

do u get better fps if u remove V'sync? u wont get past 60 with it

I was thinking between getting a 570 or a 580.
I have the same resolution as you OP, if ever the DX11 patch comes out, we are going to see less FPS than that im afraid =/
I think if the gpu is under such load, the game is making use of the graphics card quite well.

Anyone with a 570 tested the game yet? The 580 is quite expensive compared to the 570 and i dont think there's a massive difference but im still unsure what to get.

I had to remove my drivers, and install the latest (march 1st) beta drivers, and my performance tripled and I'm on a 570 (same drivers)

Try removing it completely, and installing again - worked for me =)

(I never use vsync though)

To OP, try the 267.59 drivers. Those are the ones I have atm.

Honestly, that doesn't bode well for You gpu and I do hope its still under warranty. Give Your card manufacturer a call and have it RMA'd. The very fact that You "feel" in Your gut that something is wrong makes it so.
Personally I have an old Asus ENGTX260 and get between 45 to 60 fps depending on the server ping.
In SP on max settings @ 1900 x 1200 (Vsync off) the least I get is 35 fps and never drops below that and averages in the high 40's mid 50s.
My drivers are the latest from nvidia.com
As far as GPU load, its not more than 85% load during multiplayer but gets to 100 during SP.

get the 570s, factory OC'd if you can. Less bucks, same bang ;)

I have a gtx470 and I have been trying to stress out my gpu using the autoconfig files, and the best I could do is get it running at 45fps. I average about 55fps no matter what I try.

I have the 570 from EVGA. First EVGA product, but damn it's fast! Nothing slows it down yet. Nothing, not even Metro 2033 on full gfx.

EVGA makes great cards, and Nvidia's cards I've always known them to be really great at overclocking (GTX 460/560Ti anyone?). Although, yeah this game, even in DX9, will tear up your card and spit it out. I am always near full load on Crysis 2, and it is even hotter than most other games (or even folding, which always does 100% load). Although I don't have as good specs (EVGA GTX 560 Ti SC/AMD Athlon II X4 630), I am still getting stable fps, albeit at a lower resolution (I am doing max settings with custom settings), and I mean like 40-60fps on 1680x1050.

I need a new cpu though, its probably bottlenecking my gpu atm :\

Whats your resolution...his is 1920 x 1200 so thats 2,304,000 pixels.......a comparison

1920 x 1080 is 2,073,600 pixels or 90% of 1920 x 1200
1680 x 1050 is 1,764,000 pixels or 76.5% of 1920 x 1200

so is your resolution is lower obviously you are going to get more fps

All the current GTX 500 series cards right (including EVGA) that have reference cooler and Nvidia stamped on the PCB are made by Foxconn...basically you are paying for warranty and after the sales support unless you get a non reference PCB (like the MSI Twin Frozr II) which is actually different card but most of those dump air back into the case.

Are you all using the latest beta drivers or the 266.58 drivers?

Which ones are the best for this game?
