Game crashes just after first movie ~ Steam

Post » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:52 am

Come on Bethesda fix this already. This issue has been around from the original game.

Yes, it has and that alone has convinced me not to buy this game for a long time, if ever.

I bought the full box PC version and I was unable to run FO3 for more than ten minutes before it crashed. None of the Bethesda patches helped and in the end I installed the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch (Google it) which worked wonders. Even with the patch, I never finished FO3 as I could never get into Little Lamplight without it crashing.

They will keep putting out the same garbage until sales suffer. As long as you buy flawed product (And FO3 was one of the best selling games of all time) they have no motivation to fix anything.

I will monitor the forums and if they patch successfully then they get my money. If not, I will wait for a used copy to appear on Amazon and grab it then. It is, in the end, just a game...

No luck for me.. I decided to give my laptop a try and on there I can't even get past the launch, when I hit play it just starts the launch over again and detects my video settings.

Laptop is running windows 7 pro 32 BIT
Nvidia 8800 GTS-M
Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4

This release is absolutely horrible. I can't remember the last time I've picked up a game to not have it work on any system that I own.. You would think someone would actually try and get the game to work on a few different configurations before releasing it. Good job Beta Testers... LOL

Also I still have Fallout 3 Installed on the Laptop and that starts up with 0 issues. Go figure.

I run Windows 7 and AMD HD 5870 video card.

I was amazed when I started the game and lo and behold the exact same problem I had with Fallout 3 was happening with New Vegas. Do a search for the fix for this in the Fallout 3 forums and download the D3D9.DLL file and put in your fallout new vegas folder.

I did that and the game has been running well with the exception of a few dialog sound files which is probably related to the USB headset I use.

Here is the link where I discovered the fix for Fallout 3 that works for Fallout New Vegas as well.

Tried this, and it opens the launcher, detects my video settings, then I press play and it detects my video settings again...I hit play again, and it detects my video settings again. Over and over. Did I put it in the wrong place? I have it in
C/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/fallout new vegas

Also FWIW my New Vegas doesn't crash AFTER the intro vid, it crashes right at the beginning of the vid. Basically I just see a moon, and it says "FalloutNV has stopped working".

For those who had it keep checking video settings, try opening the newvegas exe straight from your steamapps/common/falloutnewvegas directory. Not the launcher exe, but the game exe. The launcher will still come up, but for me it actually launched the game when I hit play. No idea why this worked form me, but it did.

Ok, so I tried the D3D9.DLL fix again and put my VSync forced on and turned on tripple buffering in the Nvidia control pannel. I launched the game and it now works.

I don't consider this a fix, but at least I can play the game now. The launcher now sees my video card as a 7900 GS, but I exited out set my resolution to 1900 x 1200 and settings on high and it SEEMS to be ok. I haven't done much other than the character creation, but I am hopefull.

Not sure why it worked this time, with the DLL fix, because when I tried it the previous time I couldn't get past the launcher. The only other thing I had done was change those settings in the Nvidia control panel.

Edit: I also started the game from the NV Launcher file in the Fallout directory NOT by clicking Play on steam.. Dunno if that will make a difference but maybe.

Finally got it working last night using the steps in this link: http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/

All the stuff I did yesterday I was trying while at work and just accessing my computer with Log Me In. When I tried the fix of adding the .dll and editing the ini file to remove some entries it seemed to crash again, but a bit differently than it had been before. I decided to try it again last night once I got home and was at my computer, and it actually ran correctly this time.

One word of warning though: if you do get it working be aware of the issue with save files disappearing. I wasn't paying attention to any of the other bugs because I couldn't even play the game, so when this happened I lost my first hour or so of play. Basically the game will overwrite any auto and quick saves when you exit the game, so make sure to disable Steam Cloud sync and use manual saves in important places or before you quit.
