Unless Alcatraz was also contaminated, how did the same suit not adapt to the virus before?

Also how come we ain't invincible when the N2 suit virtually survived and repaired everything? Pretty much as long as the occupant's brain is intact (says the suit grows into wounds) then you'd pretty much be suit pulp on the inside, because we've been hit by so many bullets, and we should survive mere bullet wounds with the suit's portable superdoctor? Of course, then we'd have no gameplay, but still.
