Crysis 2: So Far, So Good

Post » Fri Jun 03, 2011 12:44 pm

Ok, I'm not very far into the game and I haven't given MP a shot yet (will probably finish SP first), but I'm having a good time. I'm not as blown away (yet) as I was with the original Crysis, but that's not cause to throw a rage fit as a disappointing sect of the gaming community has done.

I can't even believe all the DX11 complaints. It's absurd. Yes, we want all want a good looking game. But Crysis 2 looks pretty damn good to me. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen a better-looking FPS (except possibly Crysis 1). I've seen people compare it to Metro 2033, but Crysis 2 is better looking, hands down. Sure, the textures are higher res in Metro and there are DX11 effects... but the environments of Crysis 2 are about 5 times as big, twice as dense, and infinitely more varied. The lighting is simply remarkable in C2. The animations are incredibly fluid. Further, despite all of this, the game never seems to drop a frame while running at 1080p at max settings in 3D. Metro and JC2 can't hold a candle to that.

I've seen at least one person compare the visuals of the game to Half-Life 2, but I shall give that person the benefit of the doubt and assume they were drunk.

Ok, then there are the gameplay comparisons. I see people saying that C2 is a corridor shooter like CoD. Ultimately, C2 (like C1, actually) is a fairly linear game. It IS a corridor shooter. The difference between a game like CoD and C2 is the width of the corridor. I never felt like I had room to experiment or explore in any of the CoD, but the very first encounter (right after all the opening cutscenes) takes place in an extremely large area that is extremely dense (tons of objects). I experimented and explored that area alone more than in the entirety of any FPS I've played since C1. It immediately conveys a vastness I've never seen in CoD... or any other recent FPS that comes to mind.

Like I said, I'm not very far into the game. I've already seen some AI issues. I'm already worried about some of the Nanosuit changes. I despise (and I do mean DESPISE) the inability to use normal crouch (I hate toggle crouch with a passion in PC games). Despite this, I'm having fun with the game. Why can't people cool their jets and enjoy a game that stands out in a crowded market by offering unique mechanics and stellar level design?

Right now, I don't think C2 will dethrone C1 as my favorite shooter of all time. In fact, right now, it doesn't look like it will come close, which is a bit of a shame. But that doesn't mean it isn't fun... and that's what I paid for... that is more than worth my 60 bucks.

C2 may not be great yet, but so far, so good.

Despite the unlocks reseting and the ranked servers not working(for me)
The MP is actually really fun.

I love the nanosuit... it kind of makes you a superhero. Which is awesome. The thought of a bunch of people with superpowers battling it out on the rooftops is something I look forward to greatly, I just want to finish SP first. :)

Pre-Patch I was very frustrated with the AI acting like they had brain slugs. Once I had it downloaded the experience is much tighter and it improved the game considerably. At the end of my second play-through now and it does offer more routes to the end goal than COD, but is still Lacking that full C1 experience. But that has more to do with setting than gameplay mechanics.

On a side note the story is weaker than C1 in my honest opinion (which was enjoyable but hardly worthy of an Oscar). I've said this on other threads but Nomad story should have been continued. That is my major gripe with this sequel. (Although changing the name from Alcatraz to Dunn on the uniform would have probably helped tie things into C1, but then a voice actor would have had to been hired.)

You can turn off toggle crouch. (At least in MP, you'll need a config utility program or console commands to do it)

Nanosuit is great fun, and I like the new one alright. Call of duty is fun too. Great combination. Call of Nanosuit. I say that because the unique gameplay style of Farcry and C1 is gone and resembles CoD more. Not that great trade for the new suit, IMO. Makes C2 more a nanosuit spinoff than sequel crysis experience.

I just finished SP , Crysis 2. Even i bought game on Steam it is worth EVERY CENT!!! As i played game more and more, story started to have sence, enemies were harder to kill, fun factor was rising non stop, game is worth every peny if .
Ok there are some bugs, with losing nano points, and there was no DX 11 are i think bigest probs people are saying. But this DX 9 graphic is imba for like 90% users and game is not only graphics. There is stability, gameplay, story and "fun factor" which keep you play game.

I didnt had any probs on PC and i runed it on max. (amd x4 640, Nvidia 570, 4 bg ram , 120 gb SSD )

Thanks crytek on 1 more imba game. Even it is conosle port .

Now im going on MP part, where i see is a lot of problems :)
