I can't even believe all the DX11 complaints. It's absurd. Yes, we want all want a good looking game. But Crysis 2 looks pretty damn good to me. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen a better-looking FPS (except possibly Crysis 1). I've seen people compare it to Metro 2033, but Crysis 2 is better looking, hands down. Sure, the textures are higher res in Metro and there are DX11 effects... but the environments of Crysis 2 are about 5 times as big, twice as dense, and infinitely more varied. The lighting is simply remarkable in C2. The animations are incredibly fluid. Further, despite all of this, the game never seems to drop a frame while running at 1080p at max settings in 3D. Metro and JC2 can't hold a candle to that.
I've seen at least one person compare the visuals of the game to Half-Life 2, but I shall give that person the benefit of the doubt and assume they were drunk.
Ok, then there are the gameplay comparisons. I see people saying that C2 is a corridor shooter like CoD. Ultimately, C2 (like C1, actually) is a fairly linear game. It IS a corridor shooter. The difference between a game like CoD and C2 is the width of the corridor. I never felt like I had room to experiment or explore in any of the CoD, but the very first encounter (right after all the opening cutscenes) takes place in an extremely large area that is extremely dense (tons of objects). I experimented and explored that area alone more than in the entirety of any FPS I've played since C1. It immediately conveys a vastness I've never seen in CoD... or any other recent FPS that comes to mind.
Like I said, I'm not very far into the game. I've already seen some AI issues. I'm already worried about some of the Nanosuit changes. I despise (and I do mean DESPISE) the inability to use normal crouch (I hate toggle crouch with a passion in PC games). Despite this, I'm having fun with the game. Why can't people cool their jets and enjoy a game that stands out in a crowded market by offering unique mechanics and stellar level design?
Right now, I don't think C2 will dethrone C1 as my favorite shooter of all time. In fact, right now, it doesn't look like it will come close, which is a bit of a shame. But that doesn't mean it isn't fun... and that's what I paid for... that is more than worth my 60 bucks.
C2 may not be great yet, but so far, so good.
