Halo 1 wasn't bad certainly, but I was somewhat baffled at all the praise it got at the time. Sure the story is interesting, the AI was sweet, and co-op was fun... but the level design was atrocious. Long hallway, gigantic empty plains, long hallway, gigantic open planes, and so forth. That has been the hallmark of the Halo series, actually... all the others do the same thing as far as I can tell.
If you want to look to an FPS game that has held its own (that isn't a Crytek game), look to the Half-Life series and Deus Ex. Still incredible.
