Crysis 2 has SO much potential but is fatally marred by the fact that it's clearly an unfinished game - I can't believe the grain glitch, sound issues, lag, etc. made it past testing, and somehow still exists!? Judging from the people I know (and people at Gamestop and Best Buy), Crytek's reputation has dropped dramatically to the point that they're no longer considered an AAA dev when IMO they should be. Sadly, I think Crytek may be in the same league as Kaos Studios (Homefront) despite nearly making a far superior game (not in sales but in gameplay and developer potential). They could be up their with Epic and Bungie - if not, inter alia, for the failure in damage control.
I've heard it too many times to count, "How about Crysis 2?" Then the clerk responds, "It's kinda fun but it's pretty broken". This leads to a greater problem as Crytek's subsequent games have a likelihood of being treated as 'B' titles - they're fast becoming know for releasing faulty software, which would diminish Crytek's brand significantly.
Crysis 2, despite the reviewer praise, and from my anecdotal experience, is being viewed as unappealing due to all the negative word of mouth. People all talk about how it could be great but is a technical mess.
EA doesn't care about Crytek, they want to meet quarterly projections. Crysis 2 probably achieved that this year but at the cost of gamer (consumer) regard, which means people will be less and less excited about future Crytek releases. What are they becoming known for? Slow support and technical problems - probably due to lack of adequate financial support from the publisher.
If/when Crytek's brand becomes synonymous with 'almost great but fatally flawed' and sales fall below EA's quarterly projections, Crytek will become another unprofitable developer that EA will try and sell. I'm not sure if the owners/heads of the company are still around, maybe Crytek's now just a collection of (talented) game makers trying to keep a job while working hard to make the best game they can within the economic exigencies of a massive corporate publisher, but if the next release is this unfinished, most will probably be looking for a new job sooner than they think because EA will drop you. No one wants to buy or play games from a failed developer.
Fixing Crysis 2 now won't change anything in regards to the damage done to Crytek's reputation, it will certainly please devoted fans but I feel if this type of rushed release happens again Crytek's brand value will be irrevocably lost.
I say this because people were so excited for Crysis 2 and now all they say are negative things about it and its waisted potential. Who can't see the irony in the having the the alleged "best graphics on the console", only to be plagued with a graphical glitch that makes half the game one of the most displeasing graphics on the console.
Had to rant, I hate to see good devs ruin themselves...I don't blame you Crytek. I believe most devs try and release the best product they can while negotiating the corporate behemoth(s). Art and business are poor bed fellows. Entertainment is probably something inbetween.
