Oblivion constantly crashes.

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 9:31 pm

Since today, Oblivion constantly crashes when I try to start up the game. I insert the disc, click the play button in the Oblivion launcher and when the intro movie starts, the game crashes after a few seconds. I don't even get to the main menu. All of this seems very strange because I could still launch and play Oblivion succesfully yesterday. Why would this day be any different?

The only thing I did yesterday was testing a small piece of new content I created for my mod project but the game worked fine so there was no reason to assume that anything was wrong. Today, I did the same thing as yesterday: adding some new NPC's to the mod project along with some customized armour and weapons. To be honest, I did that several times before already in the same mod and every time it worked. But now that I want to start up the game to see if it works, the game doesn't start up anymore.

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?

(I checked UESP's information on "Oblivion crashes on start-up" already and couldn't find the answer there.)

Uncheck the last mod you altered, and see if the game will start.

I'll try to switch back to the last working version first and save the deactivation of my mod project for the second option. I'll be back later with the new info.

I switched back to the previous version of the mod and I was able to succesfully launch and play the game again. Now I'll try the latest version again to see if the problem returns. If it does, I must find some way to work around the bug or whatever you like to call it. If it doesn't, then I'm curious why the game constantly crashed yesterday but I'm afraid there will not be an answer to that question. :S

I tried the latest version again and the problem returned. To be honest, I had expected that. So somewhere in that file, something happened that ****** up the mod but I don't know what it is so I'll be doing everything all over again. Luckily, I always kept the latest working version on a safe location on my harddisk and since I didn't change much compared to the latest working version, it doesn't really matter that I have to do it again.

Thanks for the tip, HeyYou. I'll keep that in mind next time something like this happens.

To forum moderators: As far as I'm concerned, this topic can be closed because the game works again. For now, there's nothing left to do anymore.
