The Dunmer language?

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 5:50 pm

I was just wondering if the Dunmer have their own language, as they use words like Sera and Balmora and such. Is this theirs or a greater language?

I don't know. Initially I thought "of course they speak the same language as the Cyrodiils", but upon reflection I'm not so sure.

Regardless, Balmora is a name, and can't be said to be indicative of the existence of another language. It could just be a Cyrodiilic name the way "New York" or "Frank" are English names without being regular English words.

Balmora means 'stone forest' if I am not too rusty.
Ald'ruhn means something like old home, or ancestral abode.
Tel Mora, island forest.
Most, if not all, names of towns in Morrowind have names like this, and there are other names like that too.
Bal Molagmer = stone fire men, wich would make Molag Bal 'fire stone'.

I think these probably are examples of Dunmer language. Or is it Daedric?

Most of this I got from playing Morrowind religiously for over five years :)
For instance, Gentleman Jim Stacey tells you that Bal Molag Mer means stone fire men. I think because they used to carry glowing embers of lava down from Red Mountain.
Im quite sure there isnt an inch of Vvardenfell I do not know about, and not a line of dialogue I have not seen.

After a while I found that I could look at the map that came with the game and read the daedric font lol.

But the link provided by Ferricus on this thread I think provides more information, and it is indeed as I remembered, except that it says 'Tel' means 'Tower', so I was probably wrong on that.

Yep, the Dunmer have their own language, called Dunmeri. I don't think there is a dedicated page for it, but all terms and translations should be available in the http://www.imperial-library.info/content/translation-dictionary

Tel Mora, island forest.

But then...

What about Tel Uvirith? Uvirith is the name of the owner, but Tel... Must mean either "Island" or "forest". Both completely illogical. Or perhaps it was named before Red Mountain exploded?

Edit: Need to learn to read threads before I post. nevermind ;)

And I'm pretty sure they speak Daedric. Look at the signs all over. They all use Daedric lettering.
