Beta/Pre-release Daggerfall Preview Found

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 10:03 am

I found a very cool pre-release preview of Daggerfall in an old issue of "Computer Gaming World Magazine". It is available for free as a .pdf, so check it it out, and post what you think!

http://cgw.vintagegaming.org/galleries/index.php?year=1995&pub=2&id=126 :vaultboy:

Its on page 32 of the pdf.

EDIT: Since the link doesn't seem to work anymore, here is a http://www.mediafire.com/?ivxwi3yt0a6ru7e.

Whoa, excellent find! It's a shame that they don't really print computing enthusiast magazines anymore. You may be interested to know that the promotional artwork on the CGW cover was the original Daggerfall title, as seen http://home.comcast.net/~mjonesgraphics/daglogo.html of Mark Jones' website. I'd actually been seeking to procure a higher resolution version for certain...nefarious DaggerXL related purposes, and this actually is quite a nice start. Anything is acceptably "higher resolution" when the original you're working with is 320x200, so yeah. :P

One bit of Daggerfall memorabilia I've been wanting to track down is the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVZRbElVj10 that was bundled on a CD of Interactive Entertainment back in 1995. Drop me a line if anybody has any ideas where to start.

Well, it was (pre-)reviews like that one that got me to buy the game.

Weird, the link doesn't seem to work anymore. It worked yesterday. Good thing I downloaded it yesterday! I will mirror it, in a little bit.

EDIT: Mirror link up.

Wow this one brings me soooo far back. Not just when Daggerfall was on its way out, of course, but reading about such classics as Great Naval Battles 3, TIE Fighter, Colonization, Master of Magic, U.S. Navy Fighters, Lords of the Realm, the original Warcraft... Ahhh, those were the days. ^_^

Sad to see all those things that never got included, though... like the rudimentary physics engine hinted at, or the more complex interactions with NPCs... ah, well, already knew about those anyway. Wasn't as if Daggerfall wasn't a great game as it was, if a little frustratingly and obviously incomplete, but that happens sometimes. :)

Man, Rise of the Triad? This magazine had tabs on everything! The internet may be more convenient, but lacks a certain...charm that used to be there in the 90's, clambering out of bed ecstatic to see the latest issue of your favorite computing magazine had arrived, then digging through them for all of the secret strategies and the latest previews.

EDIT: By the way, http://cgw.vintagegaming.org/galleries/index.php?year=1993&pub=2&id=113 appears to have had an early preview feature of Arena. Unfortunately, scans of the issue aren't archived on the site.
