Black mold

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 12:56 am

So it turns out that my basemant has an unknown amount of black mold in it, which has evidential been making me cough my head right off. We (my family) called someone to take a look at it, and they told us we could clean it ourselves. Well turns out we shouldn't be doing it ourselves and if a pharmacist's word is correct we shouldn't even be in the house.

My question is this: Has anyone else dealt with black mold? And if so, how did you get rid of it? I'm going to the allergist on Monday to get something for my cough, and right now I'm wearing a surgical-grade mask to help keep from breathing any spores. My family is also going to get someone else in as soon as possible this week to tell us what to do/what they can do.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't experienced it but

I do know it's most likely quite toxic (if it's rather uh... resilient and quite black it's probably toxic mold...)

So ya, all you can really do is call a professional to come take a look and see if it can be dealt with (hopefully without having to replace everything) and find somewhere else to stay in the meantime asap

I think it's that new deadly virus going 'round. It has never happened to me before, though.

If I remember correctly, they had to close a wing in my high school because of the mold. Didn't cut any of the classes though. Just moved them. But, yeah, you shouldn't be around that stuff.

I used bleach.

If you want to do it properly spend a few thousand on professional mold remediation service

It's most definitely black. :P

I considered going to my grandparents to stay, problem is they don't have internet. Granted, health concerns outweigh internet, but still. I've moved all my junk upstairs in the meantime and I'm avoiding my basemant as much as possible so see if it helps while we get this issue fixed. With the mask on, as I said.

If you are exposed to much of it this stuff can seriously mess you up (everything from just the coughing you have now to completely destroying your immune system and well eventually your brain etc...)

If you are going to spend much time at the house at least get a full face respirator with approved HEPA filters... ya I know it sounds like overkill but ya...

I did what Terash Cas did. Went into the mold areas, unscrewedd the bottle, and splish splashed everywhere. Then, took a hose and sprayed the place of the bleach and mold. As long as you have a drain down there you should be fine. If not... theres always bilging.

The bad thing is it gets into your walls and insulation. It's not just a surface thing. So bleach and water isn't necessarily going to do the trick. I would err on the side of caution and gtfo. But that's just me.

I'd say bleach. Or mold remover. Last year's flat had mold EVERYWHERE. You just kinda....spray it on, wipe it off, problem solved. And maybe see about improving the ventilation.

I would stop sleeping in there or else you'll start creeping/crawling around your parents bedroom door.

What's black mold exactly? Due to the high humidity a lot of houses get black patterns on the ceiling/wall here. I'm asking because the direct translation of the word to English is "mold".

Black mold is a black fungus. Some of them are dangerous, most of them are just an unsightly nuisance.

Yeah but MWF's mold is dangerous according to you guys, and I want to check if it's the same stuff we get here.

It depends on the species, but there are a few kinds of mold that are black in color that emit toxic spores. They can be very dangerous in high concentrations.

I'd get out of the house for a bit and just get someone in there to actually take care of the problem, not just look at it. I have no idea how to go about killing mold, and if you don't, I'd leave the job to someone who does.

Yay, someone got the reference. :celebration:

I should specify that it isn't in my bedroom, rather in my workspace.

Yeah, our house had black mold in the basemant a few years ago. We didn't have to leave. But we did have to run one or two O3 generators while most of the basemant walls were being gutted out. Now the basemant looks like white, powdery, unfinished construction work and we don't use it for much of anything.

Oh god, the Yellow Wallpaper is a creepy story :cold: We read it this past year in English as a short story assignment

and I had Black Mold in my old house, but due to money constraints we had to stay there for a while.

I figure the walls are concrete in your basemant, right?

That's a negative, my dad renovated our basemant YEARS ago and turned it into what basically amounts to an apartment. It's a complete level of our house, so there's a lot of Sheetrock.

Read it for English awhile back.

Good luck getting rid of it. Black Mold sounds like it might have to redo the whole plaster though depending on how long it was there.

We had (Have?) black... stuff in our basemant. Black stuff, all over the walls. The walls used to leak, you see, so it got rather wet in there. This was all before we moved in about... seven years ago. Been living with it ever since. We tried to remove it with bleach, CLR, all sorts of cleaner. It was a stubborn wall, not even the rust stains would come off. We ended up just painting over everything.

Is the yellow wallpaper the book where the lady goes crazy because she thinks she sees someone inside the wallpaper?
