In game Codex

I know ther are books in the game that give some information about certain creatures or places but would you like a codex in game similar to Dragon Age (but even better), whereby whenever you encounter a new creature, town, flora and fauna, NPC etc information is added to give you a large database of information.

This information would give you information goblins as a example their weaknessess, strengths, battle tactics, places where they live (provinces, habitat etc), weapons they use, where to find them in literature and other such info. It could work based upon when you first find something new you get an codex update simply tellling you the name of the creature and whre you found it, you would gain more knowledge about it the more of them you fight, knowledge could be gained through reading books or talking to NPC's etc. Same with flowers, you would get more updates in codex the more of a paticular species you find, the more potions you make using it, from books, NPC'S. This would apply to everything in the game.

Another cool thing I wopuld like is a large libary where there is just a large encylopedia in game where you can find all this information. There could be some cool quests attached to it regarding missing information and you are sent to try and recover it, that would give the developers a pretty big reason to send you off to do dome wacky stuff! Flamer investigating for example

There is a codex already. It's called UESP wiki. And I don't have to keep the game running to read it.

I think the codex the way you've described it whereby you still need to read books or have the appropriate skills as an addition to your journal would be nice. I like the traditional approach of having to research things using in game books which are written from the perspective from in game characters and therefore possibly incorrect or incomplete though.

Better yet, just allow us to write our own notes so we can always have a custom made codex.

You need permission to take a piece of paper and write down anything you want?

They meant in game.

I love the ideas of libraries to visit and look at information. I could imagine some quests where you have to cast spells or use an artifact/scroll to examine creatures or even people, and then when you deliver the results to the quest giver they could give you a book or entry with information about what/who you scanned for them.

This has been possible in console games in the past. Moreover all of the consoles support USB keyboards... though I admit there is almost no chance of Bethesda adding USB keyboard support too the console versions of the games.

Custom markers on maps and such are easily done on consoles as well. It's a pity custom labels on the map have been confirmed out.

The idea is sound, but I don't see the benefit from it in the TES series. It really has never mattered. Just beat them until they're a bloody pulp and you win. The only real exception is Wil-o-wisps. ghost and wraith's. Even then after the first time regular weapons do jack diddly [censored], you find away around it.

Well see, here's the thing. On the one hand, I agree it would be rather cool. But on the other, what I like about the in-game lore books are that they're written as if the gameworld were real- meaning some are accurate information, some are iffy, and some are outright ignorance and/or propaganda with ulterior motives. So, I wouldn't mind "some" information being available in this form, but I wouldn't want anything approaching "all" useful information regarding creatures and such. Leave the "everything you need to know to beat every critter" for the Wiki, and make clear that even those in the gameworld don't necessarily know everything about it.

This. Just provide us with more literature that our characters can buy and maybe a few very knowledgeable NPCs (hunters, cartographers, etc.).

Speaking of which, perhaps it might be a nice enough compromise if there are a few freelancing in-game scout/cartographers where you can buy their service to mark out the point of interests (dungeons, caves, etc.) in your map for the price of a decent amount of golds (maybe around 100-500 septims, depending on the area coverage, and other factors,) which will be fully fast-travel-able right off the bat. This way, the type of players who just want to zips past to where all the actions are can purchase this service to saves a lot of their time, while for the people like me who really enjoy exploring and getting lost on our own will finally be able to not having our fun being ruined by those pesky GPS-like 'POI' marks on our compass, and just ignore the map-marking service provided by the NPCs.

Although I like this idea and I love the codex in dragon age ( what an awesome game) I don't feel as though it suits the elder scrolls, the game is made to feel as though you are actually inthe game so to be able to just a loads of information sitting there waiting for you doesn't quite feel right where as if I actually have to find a book and read about the topic it feels much more imersive

Thaw just my opinion anyway

Ps sorry for the bad grammar I'm typing on my iPod :)

What if I don't have one? That means that's a useless feature only available to those who are on PC, have usb keyboards and/or chat pads. And that equals to "not happening".

Textual input in a console game has been around way longer than keypads or keyboard support.

In addition, I don't think a feature should be omitted all because consoles can't control it as well.

Good luck with an on-screen keyboard then.

I'm not denying the possibility of the feature, I only say it won't be added because it's vexatious and awkward to use, which will cause console audience backlash. Hoo boy.

As for the codex itself, I'd like to see something on par with A.D.O.M. The more creatures of the same type you kill, the more info you get. And a books/rumour info added on top of that too.
