Sovngarde translates to "sleep guard". The dreamsleeve both precedes life and follows it at its termination. Its where one gets recycled. Vehk says dying is a lot like going to sleep. As is being a god. Ergo, the sleep guard is probably what the Nords dream about when they die.

Really, I think it was proweler who worked it out. He might have other shreds of evidence too, but that was the gist of it, and the dream sleeve/ sleep guard similarities kind of speak for themselves.

I doubt that you have to leave. Dunmer ancestor worship seems to suggest that one can stay in the world beyond to better watch over the living.
