books over magazines

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:58 am

I really enjoyed in Oblivion, how when you read certain books, it increased your levels in certain areas. Yes, I'm lazy like that, but when FO split it among magazines and books, (magazines for a short period of time books, permanent) I was a little ticked. I mean, the magazines helped, but I felt that there were too many of them in circulation. That said, there are no magazines in Skyrim, but I'm just hoping for no equivalent of a magazine for Skyrim. What do you all think about that whole book situation?

Well there is currently no "situation" as far as books are concerned but so far in TES books are for reading and learning and not temporary boosts to your skill like fallout nv's magazines. I don't want that to change.

Fortify X skill spells renders 'temp skill boost books' obsolete.

In Fallout New Vegas, they had books that leveled your skills like in Oblivion, and also magazines that gave you a temporary stat boost. He seems to hope that they do it more like in Oblivion, and leave out the temporary stat boost that magazines provided, like in New Vegas, for Skyrim. I would tend to agree with that myself as Elder Scrolls has magic for that kind of thing.

If there were a "magazine" equivalent, as in it temporarily boosted X, it would be implemented to give temporary access to characters not specialized in X area. I think thats the discussion. Giving character abilities of others through temporary means. Or in other words, should there be areas locked off to certain build types before X specialties/parameters/checks have been met?

Fortify X scrolls are pretty much already the equivalent of magazines. At least it actually makes sense why they disappear after being used and that the effect wears off...

should there be areas locked off to certain build types before X specialties/parameters/checks have been met?

Yes, it would help even more to create unique experiences with different characters. I think they won't do that though because people will throw a fit. Reminds me of guilds in oblivion...

I was a fan of the elderscrolls books and the concept of books!
I still have my ABC's for Orcs book in my Morrowind home's study.

I think it would be awesome to get some more DLC Book updates on the 360! New books come to the world and NPCs purchase and read them, ultimately leading to quests and things to be overheard. I hope bethesda gives us a little more DLC (a lot). Polished mods that make the game better and grander for the 360.

Almost like a PC person can do...

A lot of the lore can be written into these books and released like the Elderscrolls novel and having major impact of the world we will be playing.

NPCs can all of a sudden begin to advance and get smarter. The Books can help spark deeper dialog

Of course you will need the hardrive space to store your addons

Yeah, if there's one DLC I dont mind paying for, it would be ES stuff. I liked Horse Armor, seriously it helped out with a few builds of mine. Spell Tomes even gave me the Summon Black Bear spell which was essential to my Bosmer Druid.

Yes, it would help even more to create unique experiences with different characters. I think they won't do that though because people will throw a fit. Reminds me of guilds in oblivion...

I agree, but I would want things like the roofs in Dementia. The old Mage character that never jumped, had no idea what was up there unless he used Magic, or the Tank that couldn't leap a creek, he couldn't traverse Shivering Isles from one point to the other without touching the ground... Man, SI was alright in that regards. That's why I always wanted a Valenwood ES.

Temporary effects should be incredibly strong. In the past I would completely ignore say, potions that I would pick up because of the poor boost.
I haven't played FO enough to experience this myself but I understand what the OP means. Again, if there are "magazines" or a variation of such in Skyrim, I would want the temporary effect to be incredibly strong so I don't ignore it completely.
