My laptop rig - Holding me back in multiplayer?

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 4:33 am

My desktop is out of action atm so I have been using my laptop to play Crysis 2. The laptop spec is 4gb RAM, intel 740QM and Nvidia 435m and I'm having trouble play Crysis 2 multiplayer -

I often get terrible FPS, it never goes above 30 and often hangs at around 10-15 fps and I'm wondering if there is any way I could boost my performance. I'm already running Game booster and have the settings on lowest (high...) but the problem persists -

Would overclocking and investing in some laptop cooling increase my fps or is there nothing really I can do?

Turn V-Sync off, it could help, laptop cooling is a good solution too

I think the cooling might a be a problem. I tend to get lower fps after 30mins or so of playing and area where my GPU is is 'very' hot to the touch.

How well do these laptop cooling stands work? I havn't really used anything like that before, (this is my first laptop)

I have created my own Laptop Cooling system, yes it works still good a little bit loud but it is still cool, average is 38 Celsius without it was over 50 Celsius, i give you a link where you can see how you can make your own cooling system, i made mine with AC 12 Volt because USB is not the best to cool the laptop !

Okay, thanks! I'll give it a go, should be able to pick up those parts from a friend -

In hindsight just having the laptop flat of the desk probably isn't doing it any favours

I have i3 wit 8 gb ddr3 and ati 5650 1gb gddr3 oced to 700/950 and the game runs anywhere between 35 to 70 fps with custom config. Cooling is a must , my GPU doesnt go past 68 celsius. I lift the back of my laptop up for extra air flow, cooling pad could be also effective...

Your CPU is good, GPU is pathetic and it's holding you back.

A GPU in the HD6770M level, or newly annouced GTX560M level should perform well

Gamed for about an hour and monitored GPu and CPU temp

GPU temp after game: 96 (Degrees)

Cpu temp after game: 83-87 (Degrees)

Cooling might be a problem....

Edit: these were average values I read when tabbing todesktop at score screen, max values show temp did not go above this

What do you expect for a laptop? They're not good for hardcoe gaming and especially not for long periods of time.

Depending on what type of shell your laptop has, you can ensure that it's getting a good intake source.

Hell, connect your A/C to it lol...

But Most laptops just have exhaust ports on the back or bottom, so one thing you can do is to create a vacuum right in front of the exhaust and accelerate the dissipation of heat. But again, a cold air intake would help alot too if possible.
