Keyboard and mouse

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:34 am

Hiya

For the first time ever I'm playing a game on my laptop instead of on my Xbox (it's Amnesia). I love the game so far but haven't played much because I'm finding playing with a keyboard and mouse to be really, really difficult and awkward - probably because I've always played games using controllers. Is it one of those things where if I just persevere I'll get used to it and wonder why I ever had problems, or is it worth getting a controller for my lappy? My Xbox controller is wireless, and apparently you need one with a wire.

My inclination would be to stick with it. I also hated the keyboard/mouse combination (though I was coming from keyboard-only, so maybe that's different) but mostly there's no looking back for me. Of course there's no guarantee you'll get on with it, but I'd be inclined to try it out for at least a couple of weeks.

IMO it depends on the game since in some games I prefer a controller and in otehrs I prefer a keyboard + mouse. A PC Xbox controller is also cheaper than a good keyboard + mouse  however there are games it may not be compatible with.

I've been doing a bit of lurking elsewhere and apparently this game isn't compatible - however you can use some sort of software to get around it and configure the buttons or something. Sounds like a nuisance but if I find I can't play with the K&M I might do it.

Good to hear someone else didn't get on well with this set up to start with - gives me hope that I might improve!

Might be because it's a laptop too. I can't imagine trying to game on a laptop's keyboard.

As for controllers, Xbox 360 is probably the best way to go since most newer games' controller options are configured for it by default. There's the http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm if you just wanna use your wireless controller, or wired is fine too. Both are about the same price, or cheap Chinese knockoffs of the adapter can be had on eBay for less. Programs like http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm or http://www.xpadder.com/ can be used to map keyboard and mouse buttons to controllers. I've always used Xpadder and it works fairly well.

Alternatively, if you have a PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS/DualShock 3 controller, you can use http://www.motioninjoy.com/ drivers on PC. There's even an option to emulate an Xbox 360 controller so that most games detect the PS3 controller.

I say just stick with it. I went from playing Morrowind on the Xbox to the PC and I hated using the keyboard and mouse for a while until I got used to it. Then my mouse broke and now I have to use the track-pad or whatever it is on the laptop. It was really annoying at first but now when I try to play with a mouse I can't do it :P

So my advice is just stick with it for a while until you get used to it.

I'm guessing the problem is you're getting scared and twitchy. Try to relax as much as you can. You probably picked a bad game to start with, but it can still work! Moving the mouse quickly will make you turn more per inch of mouse movement than moving it slowly because of mouse acceleration. Keep your nerves and things will be easier.

If you are playing a game with mouse acceleration you are doing it wrong.

I'd be inclined to say stick with it, though it does depend what type of game it is you're playing. If it's an FPS or an RTS, then mouse and keyboard > controller every time. It may take a while to master if you're not used to it, but once you've got it nailed you'll be infinitely quicker and more accurate.

Tekken-style games, driving sims or sports games are much easier with a controller though.

If I remember correctly, in Windows7 it's either impossible or a huge pain in the ass to get rid of mouse acceleration. I could be wrong, though.

The only problem I have with it is trying to use something to set up as a mouse pad next to my laptop.
