Which is more important in a game

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 4:21 am

spurred by the comments of older franchise fan responses to contemporary sequels/remakes. Which is a bigger factor in what makes a game for you, the story or the POV and mechanics that usually go with them? Please note, I am not talking "good or bad" when i say Story and POV/Mechanics, rather the differnet styles. Lets say for our purpose in this thread that both of these attributes are superb.

POV/mechanics.

So long as the story isn't so bad that it makes you want to harm yourself and others, it takes the second spot.

This.

And then there's the fact that high quality enough of one, can give you a reason to put up with the other. (i.e, a great story will make you want to sit through crap mechanics... and great enough mechanics can excuse a lousy story.)

It still depends on the game. Also, POV and mechanics are not interchangable, so...

they arent, but more times than not, they are directly related to each other.
Hence me saying " mechanics that usually go with them"

as sad as it is, i am a flash trash kind of person. story is important though, because without it, there is really no replay values if the flash is not flash enough.

I don't play 1st person games. So I guess POV wins out over story for me.

Although a good game should have both, a good story is more important for me. I can put up with dodgy mechanics if the story is good, but if the story is bad, I am unlikely to remain interested in a game for more than a few hours. If a game doesn't even have a story, I am probably not even going to play it in the first place.

For me, the latter option. It's practically what makes the game a game. Now, that being said, the importance of story varies on what kind of game it is. If it's a game like the Elder Scrolls or Mass Effect, something like that, then yes, the developers better have a darn nice amount of story to go with it. That being said, I don't play a game for stories. If I wanted to have awesome stories all the time, I would go to a Library or look through some of my shelves. I play games to... what else? Play games. The game mechanics is what makes everything in the end.

Now that being said, there are some games where the story grabs the mechanics and says, "You are a mere accessory to my amazing body." -looks to L.A Noire-

Like other said, it depends on the kind of game it is or was. X-Com suddenly switching to first person, real time view changes EVERYTHING. Its not as if X-Com was known for its amazing story, which is why that aspect doesn't matter for it.

I'm a picky gamer. I only look at a certain genre that has to include first-person and have a good story.

1- Type of game- open world fantasy RPG
2- POV/Mechanics- First person, WASD, not a crapload of other buttons to remember
3- Story- if it svcks, I won't buy it

I don't need story when playing Doom 5 or Duke Nukem Eternity, but when I play a Baldur's Gate 3, you better give me a damn good story or I'll suicide bomb your company.

I'm in the Yahtzee line of thinking, in that a great story can make a poor game good, and a bad story can make a great game mediocre.

As someone who frequently reads fantasy books I say the story. There are many books that I consider to be better than any game I′ve played.

(And yes, prepare to go all *gasp*, because that includes TES too)
