Your Gaming Options?

While I don't believe there has been an official announcement on what platform the game is going to be on I think a fair majority of us here are more than likely expecting at minimum a PC version (as most MMO's are). With that in mind I was just curious as to what other Platforms you have or use and if a PC what specs do most people have currently on their PC (be as elaborate as you want to on the PC stats).

I personally think something that would be truly fantastic is to consider opening the game to both PC and Xbox 360 Users with direct interaction between players on the 2 different platforms. I know the logistical nightmares that could ensue but the thought of a full blown MMO on a console that could interact directly with PC users not only opens up for a potentially much larger player base but could also be something unique to the game itself.

Some Stats to ponder.
In 2007 there was an estimated 350 Million Gamers world wide.
In 2007 62% of Gamers were online gamers.
In 2007 a majority of Online Gamers were console owners.
In 2007 54% of Online Players from consoles Come from the xBox 360 45% from PS3
In 2007 Average Time played online per day was 7.1 hours for xBox 360, 6.1 hours for PS3, 5.8 hours PC/Mac

Anyway here we go.
xBox 360 (3 consoles)
PS3
PC - Custom Built
i7 930 @ 4.21 Ghz
12 Gigs DDR3 1600 Mhz Memory
Dual GTX 470 Video Cards in SLI
256 GB SATA III SSD
1 TB Western Digital Black SATA III HD
Custom Water Cooling

No.

It would be a waste of development time/money and cripple the game for PC users. Plus who would want to be in an MMO with hordes of buttons mashing, 12 year old, cry baby, console kiddies? Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

anyway, they wouldn't be the first.

CCP have already done a version of this, they are connecting EvE and Dust514 together. Image

The Dusters and the EvEers won't be going head to head. The PCs players will still be in space with the console kiddies on the ground. Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

gamesas only has the rights to do a PC version, they can't bring the game to other platforms without negotiating it with Bethesda. Given the lawsuit, I doubt there will be much negotiation going on in regards to other platforms.

Very few companies have actually been able to successfully create console MMO's. I think current console MMO's are closed meaning if you are playing Phantasy Star or Final Fantasy 12 you can only play with other console players but I could be wrong on that. Microsoft at one point had three console MMO's in the works (Citizen Zero I think, Marvel Universe, and third one that I forgot) all of them have been canceled.

Sony has a dedicated MMO division and they are just getting an MMO on the PS3 and so far it seems to be meeting with mixed results based on the fees model.

MMO's in general might have a better chance of working well on the PS3 than 360 simply because very few would want to play $50 a year for Live and an extra $15 or so a month on top of that for an MMO. Unless Microsoft changes this model I don't think a console MMO on the 360 can do that well.

Statements like this are why people don't take PC gaming seriously. There have been plenty of successful console MMO's in the past and some still run. The average American console gamer is also in their 30s.

Also, you can use USB keyboards and mice on consoles. Dreamcast MMO's and multiplayer titles such as Quake III allowed this.

Only loosely. The two will never meet or directly interact. As much as I'd like to rain down death and destruction on the low brow buttons mashers with my dreadnaught. I won't be able to. Thinking that you know anything about MMOs because you play WoW. Is like thinking you're a master chef because you work at McDonalds.

And I guess that people on PC will have the upper hand, at least from my experience of playing on consoles/PC. Image

The last expansion (Tyrannis) allows players to build on planets, like factories etc. Later on this will be connected to Dust 514 so players can fight for territories on planets and the battlefield can be chosen by corps/players in eve if I remember correctly. Image

As stated, MMO's are computer games. Opening them up to consoles would make the games more twitch based and not as RPG like. I like them PC only, and hope they remain that way. Image

RE: Plenty of console MMO's.

And I don't see how a console would make an RPG twitch based, there are plenty of third person MMO's that don't have real time combat and can do well on consoles.

Phantasy Star Online and Final Fantasy XI stand out has they have a pretty good subscription base and in the case of Phantasy Star Online, have seen life on many consoles with success.

There were also Everquest releases on the PS2 but I don't know how they did.

The upcoming DC Universe looks pretty good too.

The everquest console version I believe was separate from the pc version.

FFXI was crappy controls, horrible gameplay. If you played it you'd understand. Not exactly a game worthy to PVP in.

DC Universe I'll have to wait and see, but I doubt it'll work out well. Image

I played FFXI on 360, it was ok but I'm not a Final Fantasy person. Regardless, the game still has subscriber base of nearly two million and has seen expansions/sequels across all platforms.

Out of curiosity, why do you think DC Universe can't work well? An MMO doesn't need interaction with a foreign environment (such as with PC players for instance) to be called an MMO. Even if a console MMO can only be played with other players on the console doesn't make it any less of an MMO. If it's down to control schemes and the environments are isolated I don't see any issue, but even if there was cross platform play all current consoles (not sure on the Wii though) allow for USB keyboards to be used with the system so developers always have the option of requiring a keyboard/mouse setup on console.

Most people I know who play/played FFXI used an Xbox Controller...basically turning their PC into a console. FFXI was a Console MMO. I agree there can be console MMOs, but I think they are a completely different playstyle.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, even though I'm right :) Image

Also if you make the console require a keyboard/mouse, then it's basically a PC with no upgrade capabilities, so again, limiting IMO. I don't think we'll ever agree, but I seriously hope they don't touch consoles with Fallout Online. Image
