Australia doesn't have a very good broadband network at the moment, so alot of people are unable to get it unless you live close to major cities, or realy close to an exchange.
Not to mention, alot of people can't even afford it with the increased costs of food ect.
As for me, I prefer physical copies. I don't like third party software telling me when and how I can play my game. If my internet is down, or if I'm not at home I'd like to be able to play my game without having to connect online.
(I'm aware that steam has an 'offline' mode, however it will not stay in this state forever, it eventualy forces you online.)
I also like having having a physical copy because that way no one can take it from me unless they actualy stupid enough to try and invade my home.
As unlikely as it is, Steam could always fail.
I also love the anticipation of opening the case when I get home, reading the manual while the game installs and placing the box on my 'Games Shelf'.
Had alot of problems with Steam as well in the past. For several months now I've been unable to get COD Black Ops to work at all. Tried to get support from steam, no help. Tried reinstalling EVERYTHING and still no luck.
If I have problems with Oblivion, I can wipe it off the HDD, restart, reinstall and everything works nicely.
