Morrowind style fast travel system confirmed

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 7:38 pm

If you don’t fancy riding around on horseback the whole time, there will also be a Morrowind style fast travel system that will let you use carriages to reach any major settlement from the start of the game. You can also skip straight to locations you’ve already discovered without the need for a carriage.

What do you think?
It seems to be optional, and the normal fast travel is also in.

Edit: Added pole.

This was the most popular option overall, so I'm glad to see Bethesda went with it. Apparently a discussion on these forums was actually productive for once!

Was this discussed before? I must have missed it.

I did a thread search and came up dry.

Anyway, I feel it's the most elegant solution. It seems even major towns are hidden like in fallout 3, so you need to take that initial carriage ride to discover it. After that you can fast travel like oblivion, or continue to take the carriage.

I am extremely impressed by the solution.

Then you don't know how to use the search option like everyone else on this forum. It was discussed to death. Almost literally.

My response is pretty much "eh". It seems the laziest solution, just stuffing the systems from both games in there at once in the hopes it will keeps fans of either from complaining. Neither system was perfect, having both doesn't solve the flaws of either, and having that many ways to fly around a map not hardly big enough to need it could easily feel goofy. It's too early to say for sure since a couple sentences doesn't tell us how they work, but just because you can't please everyone doesn't mean dumping every ingredient in the soup will give it the best taste overall.

But they didn't just toss them together. They gave the carriage an initial purpose, and then allowed you to choose.
I imagine most people will go to the towns in the carriage, and then just fast travel the whole game.
But the carriages will still be there so it doesn't "Break people's immersion"
To be honest I think it's the best possible solution to such a controversial problem I've ever seen,

I sort of hope (though don't expect) the carriages to work like the stages in Red Dead Redemption.

I want the option to ride in the carriage without it auto loading to the next city.

I really liked riding around in the stages in RDR just watching the scenery go by while taking a nice cigarette break.

I agree, traveling through the mountains, taking a break, watching in first person.
That sounds divine.

I'm encouraged that we'll have a bit of Morrowind's system in Skyrim . . . but still including Oblivion's system bothers me.

My fear is that, instead of actually doing Fast Travel right, we get just carriages, with free-fast-travel-from-anywhere to fill in the gaps.

ALL Fast Travel should include a fee that you have to pay to travel anywhere. And Fast Travel should ONLY be available from towns and cities (by and perhaps by ships) and from mage's guilds (teleports).

You should not be able to just open your map in the middle of the wilderness, click on your destination, and instantly be teleported there.

Free-fast-travel-from-anywhere, without any consequences, should not even be an option . . . that is just poor game design for a TES RPG (in my opinion).

I'm still hoping that Beth does this right, and gives us a full Morrowind Type Transportation system . . . with not just carriages, but with also ships (since the entire northern border of Skyrim is on the Sea of Ghosts), and with mage's guilds teleports.

Having the carriage system AND the Oblivion-style fast travel seems redundant to me, but I guess it's not hurting anything.

Didn't Todd say that there would be no Morrowind type fast travel? So if we have it, does this mean we will
be able to ride on a dragon, dual weilding a spear while in Werewolf form then?

It won't be exclusively like Morrowind.

From what I can tell, cities won't be enabled for Fast Travel from the start like in Oblivion. Instead you'll have to walk there OR take a carriage to the city to discover it. Once discovered, you can freely fast travel to it. So it's really more of an early game thing. Still, I'm happy. It should make those first steps much more exciting as you discover Skyrim piece by piece.

I just hope every quest won't send you across the entire bloody map to clear out a mine or cave.

Good!

And if by Morrowind-like fast travel, they mean all those different travel options, like carriages, boats, scrolls and spells, guild guides, teleportation chambers, and the rest, then GREAT!

Because my first action with Skyrim would be modding Oblivion-like fast travel out.
