The removal of attributes has been met with some controversy to say the least. The forums have argued of it aplenty.
The main thing that I see the ones who want attributes talking about is how it lends to roleplaying; that is, seeing your intelligence gives you an idea of how smart your character is, etc. Not having this, they say, takes some of that away.
The reason they removed them is stated as being because they didn't work well. They simply affected a different number, so they cut out the middle man in order to streamline the system to make it more effective.
While washing dishes just now I was struck by a thought. Why not have attributes be a MEASUREMENT of everything else. Rather than a number that modifies another number, it is a numerical value made up of how you do things in the game world. Basically it would be like a grade; you do a lot of strength oriented things and you would see your strength trend upward, etc.
So if you're good at killing things with a hammer, it's obvious you have a high strength. If you read a lot of books, hey look you're intelligence is a little higher. Survive a good bout of poison? BAM you must be endurable.
So the numbers wouldn't be things that affect anything in the game, they would simply be a numerical summation of your character. This way you can be smart without having high Magicka, and things like that. It'd almost be like an achievement system, with the added bonus of feeling very Roleplay-y.
Does this make sense? Does it sound like a good idea?
