Transfer Morrowind install to new computer

Post » Fri Jun 10, 2011 9:10 pm

I recently just built a new desktop because the video chip in my four year old laptop was starting to die. I was able to transfer most of my important stuff to my external HDD, but didn't have room for Morrowind at the time. However, now I'd like to transfer the install from my laptop to my desktop, but I'm wondering if I can just directly transfer it without having any problems with my mods or anything. The biggest problem I foresee (I don't even know if it's actually a problem) is that my laptop was running Windows 7 Professional 32-Bit, and this new desktop is running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, would this cause any issues with a straight-up copy and paste? I know a lot of data is stored in the registry for this game, so would it be possible to just export the registry keys from the laptop and import them into the desktop's registry?

i coppied my windows XP game into a Windows 7 machine for awhile.

all i did was copy: meshes, textures, sounds, music, icons (yeh. all the vanilla folders, jst fill with mods)
then every mod added esp\esm
and then my saves and the ini

i didn't copy the original esm's. or the whole folder, i just installed a fresh morrowind, and copied everything over, like installing a GIANT mod.

might work for you?

You can pretty much just drag and drop between computers and generally it works fine.

The approach I usually take for this is to install Morrowing, Tibunal, and bloodmoon on the new machine. This creates the registry keys etc and verifies the new machine doesn't have and weird Win7 issues, or codec issues with a basic install. Then I drop the old morrowind folder onto the new one.

Actually...I do a little more. I rename the basic install morrowind to morrowind.mtb. Then when I want to start a new character I can rename the current morrowind directory morrowid.charactername. Then I copy the morrowing.mtb to morrwind. Thus I have a new unmodded morrowind to start adding a different set of mods to. I think right now I have about 5 different morrowind directories with different sets of mods and a different character for each one. All I have to do is change the names of the directories and launch the game. (Gee I hope that was clear.)

This worked perfectly for me, thanks! I still can't believe how hard this game is to run fully modded, even with my new PC I still get around 25-50 frames.

Hadn't seen that, I'll have a look. I did see http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Utilities.Detail&id=79 the other day. But the way I do it is easy enough...even just manually that I really wasn't all that motivated to download something to do it for me.... :)
