Better magic effects

Post » Fri Jun 10, 2011 11:04 pm

I was thinking that the magic effects, particularly fire, frost, etc., in Oblivion were pretty feeble by modern standards. Which mods have done a good job of improving magic effects, particularly destruction effects? Maybe someone could have another go at it. Thanks.

That looks like it's just a retexture, rather than a full on remake of the effects themselves. I've taken a look at the effects and am hoping I'll have the time to play further (i.e. release an alternative set of casting effects) before Skyrim comes out. But then I have a *lot* of things I am hoping to get done before Skyrim comes out, so don't wait around for it.

Yeah they are just retextures, but they look pretty good i think. :)

I'm using http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22119, which is newer and covers more spells than the mod already linked
.

EDIT: Actually, I checked and I'm technically using both mods because I tend to mix and match things apparently, heh.

I've been using it so long I've forgotten what the vanilla spell effects look like, heh.

Anyway here are some more various things:

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10239
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9058
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17370 (wasn't ever able to get this to work though)

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10418
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7941
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12568

I really need to finish my damn website so I can just respond to these threads with links to appropriate sections :P so slow

Those mods are nice but I am particularly interested in better destruction spells, fireball, frost and so on. I've never found a mod that greatly improves those areas.

Actually you include some of those in your last post.

Well aside from the shock/fire/frost effects I just linked, you can try http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2641 or http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17476. I have no idea if they even work, or what the effects are like, I just downloaded them when I came across them and for whatever reasons didn't end up using either of them.

I think beyond that though your best bet to have better looking spells is a magic mod that does its own custom spells, heh.

I mean it's possible there are other mods out there that improve the vanilla spells, but I haven't come across them. I'm thinking there aren't any though since I'm totally the human mod catalog after being bit by a radioactive mod archive.

Hmm, question for those who know (if anyone who does know is looking at the thread), which aspects of the magic effects are governed by the shader, and which aspects are governed by the mesh? Because while some of those mods listed have had the shader rewritten, no one seems to have done anything to the meshes. The meshes are much more versatile things after all.
