On Soul Gem Function

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 10:09 pm

While looking at Soul Gems in the CS, pondering the possibilities, I noticed that there isn't anything different about them, at least not as far as categorization/labeling is concerned. They're Miscellaneous Items, but then again so are a lot of other things, which of course do not enable one to do any soul harvesting. So what exactly is it that the game checks for in the player's inventory that lets it know that they have an adequate Gem for the soul they just successfully trapped?

Soul Gem functions are hard-coded into the game.

The game just looks to see the size of the Gem compared to the size of the soul.... but it's all hard-coded.

Does that mean I can't make my own then? Just re-texture/mesh the ones already available? Because a Dwemer soul harvesting device would be a really nice addition to the collection of baubles in Ahkmchambir. :)

EDIT: Re-texturing/meshing Azura's Star will work well enough. This is going to be awesome.
