Playing Morrowind with a gamepad

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 5:26 pm

I've never been a big fan of the keyboard and mouse for just about any game except for those that practically demand it (Civilization, Might & Magic, etc.). And, if my feelings wasn't clear enough in the topic title, Morrowind is not one of those games. It's an odd sort in that *should* be a lot more comfortable with a gamepad, but the PC version seems to deliberately makes using a gamepad as difficult it possibly can, giving me yet another reason to want to strangle the people who made it until they turn funny colors. Point in case, the D-pad should scroll much more easily through your inventory, topics, and menu selections, etc., snapping to the appropriate items rather than having to spend five minutes positioning the cursor just right.

Using my trusty PS2-style controller, I've been honing the perfect Morrowind gamepad setup for well over six years now. And by gum, I think I've finally nailed it. Joy2Key has granted me, among other things, total freedom of key mapping and the ability to adjust the speed of the mouse cursor by holding a chosen button down. The macro editor in MGE has allowed for console commands with a single button press and other functions that were previously impossible with any single keystroke. Lastly, the Morrowind Code Patch has finally given us a general-purpose "cancel/exit window" button as well as made the selection of an entire stack of items the "default" choice when grabbing stuff out of your inventory.

And now, because this board is [censored] [censored] when it comes to tabbed spaces: http://btb2.free.fr/temp/morrowind.txt

I'm saying that it *should* be easy to play with a controller.

Pretty much, yeah. Just because they *could* make it into a game you could play with a keyboard in mouse doesn't mean they had to make it into one that you *had* to play with the keyboard and mouse.
