Forgot how unforgiving Daggerfall was!

I'm only level 3, and my second fighter's guild quest has me hunting down a werecreature in a dungeon clearly above my level. I've so far died numerous times trying to get past a vampire ancient, and after exploring the whole place realize I have to jump down a massive pit into an underwater section teeming with slaughterfish, dreugh (sp?) and some sort of zombie, all waiting for me.

As if that weren't bad enough, there's 4 of those trapdoors in the floor of the underwater room that I'm assuming I have to find switches for.

I'm only level 3. I don't have the spells necessary yet, nor the capability to cast them. Even if I did have water breathing to explore, and levitate to get out (assuming there's no teleporter down there), there's nearly a dozen monsters waiting for me when I jump in. Last time I tried I couldn't even float down because they were all below me, and they killed me so fast, and hit me so quickly nonstop, that the death sequence couldn't even finish.

I actually have to go back to a previous save or else fail this quest, because it's impossible for me to do. I did not prepare properly (I'm only level, what sort of preparation do I need right?)

Even in Morrowind, which I love, I didn't have to worry so much about preparing ahead of time. These Daggerfall dungeons are brutal! It's been at least 10 years since I last played it but it's a breath of fresh air. It's challenging, massive in scale, and strangely immersive for such dated graphics.

(I tried some of the cheats to further explore underwater, but the ctrl-f4 invulnerability cheat does not work. Oh well)

Hmm does the dungeon layout forces you to go through the underwater part? Have you tried any other possible ways and any secret doors you might have missed?
Indeed, the water parts are the most difficult in any dungeons, but fortunately there are few quests that place their quest objective in a location only accessible by swimming underwater.

A vampire ancient and a werecreature at level 3. Ouch! Best of luck and I hope you brought silver weaponry with you. Else you could always get hit by the werewolf, run away and turn into one. ;)

If all else fails, it doesn't matter if you botch the quest. You lose very little reputation with the faction, but it can be easily gained by accepting new quests. Sometimes, when trying to find a job, don't be shy to turn down offers if you think they might prove too difficult for your character. :) (Like innkeepers telling you that they can reveal the origin of your shipwreck if you go fetch an item (A letter I think) in a dungeon...which is guarded by a Daedroth. It's always great to try it at Level 1 :D )

Welcome back to the harsh world of Daggerfall! :goodjob:

I'm quite familiar with that (pyramid) pit dungeon module. The switches to open those 4 trap doors are behind 4 magically locked doors which are also in the pit. The (wheel) switch to open these doors is located on a wall in the upper (i.e. maze) section of the module. Unfortunately this switch does not always exist and (at lvl. 3) I doubt that you can unlock the doors with magic.

But.....I really doubt that your (air breathing) quest object, the werebeast, is underwater. I would suggest using the [ and ] cheats if only to verify this.

(I've explored this dungeon module hundreds of times. The only times the quest object has been in the pit, either behind one of the magically locked doors or in the pit opened by the switch behind the south door, has been when it was dry).

Well I reloaded a previous save from before I traveled to the dungeon, better prepared with some homemade spells (I have a lousy 31 mana though). This time the werecreature was on the platform above the pyramid water pit, which is also the entrance room, with a chain hanging from the platform that casts levitate. The creature wasn't there in the older save, and since I explored the entire dungeon except for the water pit I thought I had to dive to find it. It was "smack yourself on the forehead" easy, and I'm concerned that in future quests I might encounter the same problem with missing objectives and wind up running around for hours looking for something that's bugged and not there.

No vampire ancient this time either. I did encounter one in a previous quest though so it's not the first one I've seen at level 3. That previous one was easily avoided.

I also managed to survive the water this time, curious about what was down there even though I didn't have to now. In the old save the 4 underwater doors all opened at the same time and I was swarmed by about a dozen creatures. This time it was easier; the doors stayed shut until the first few monsters were dead, then opened one at a time. The 4 trapdoors in the floor turned out to be raised platforms that jutted out of the water after you pulled the switches behind the doors. They did nothing, and seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever.

Still can't figure out what use those platforms are? I can just climb out of the pit.

the pit opened by the switch behind the south door

Hmm, no pit was opened in this dungeon. Each of the 4 switches raised a useless platform from the 4 trapdoors in the floor. That's it.
