IGN Interview

Neat little interview with IGN AU and Bruce Nesmith.

Here's the bit I found most interesting, hopefully it'll quell some fears about the level scaling in Skyrim

Can you talk us through the way the enemies level up in relation to your character? Is this new system only related to dungeons?'

This is a system we continually tweak and improve. It's extremely complicated and detailed at this point. Its main goal is to make sure that the player is always finding new challenges that do not devolve into unavoidable failure or trivialize success.

Skyrim's levelling system will feel a lot like Fallout 3's, although we have tweaked it. There are places that are always easy, usually near where the game starts, but not always. There are places that you shouldn't attempt until you are higher level. These are always in the more remote places in the world. If you leave and come back, they won't have gotten any harder while you were away. And there are lots of in-betweens. All of them do some dynamic adjusting to try and match the challenge to the player.

Sweet, I'm glad they chose this system, even if it's kind of old news, but offered some clarification. It's maybe even better than no scaling at all, so I'm happy! :D The part about the dragon encounters was new to me, you know that it's not just how often you've faced a dragon, it's also how far you've gotten. And that you'll have companions in the first fight.

No problem.

I don't think there's any new info here, but more details about the info we know. Things like how Dragons attack, and are integrated in the world. The Level Scaling, how Radiant Story is being used.

Thanks!

I honestly don't know what to think about the levels of enemies not changing if we leave a hard area. He says they won't change, and that worries me. I'd hate to come back, remembering it will be a challenge but knowing I'm ready, only to find it easy because I have leveled above the area. However he says everywhere changes dynamically, so do they not actually stay the same? Maybe it depends on the length of time your away?

I like to explore, as much as the next guy, but I'm infavor of areas always being a challenge, with weaker enemies sprinkled in. I just am worried about dungeons locking in, and whole areas too. So long as it isn't forever I think it will work.

IMO this is way better, because areas will stay the same which contributes to more realism and variety. But don't forget that some dungeons (if nto all) have pre-determined difficulties, so they will level up with you slightly, so some will always be hard, some always easy.

Wow articles about Skyrim every day, the hype is huge apparently.

You know what that reminds me of ?... Spore... and that turned out to be a horrible failure.

And you know why It failed? cause it was dumbed down for the kiddies, just like Skyrim.

Sounds like good news, the thing that worried me about no level scaling was the possibilty of whole area's becoming pointless with ultra weak mobs, but from what mr Howard says there it seems like even in area's with mostly low level monsters there will still be a chance for something our own level to spawn, and that is really key because without that the world would die behind us as we leveled up, from a sandbox point of view of course.

Haters gon' hate.

Your shallow cynicism ceases to amuse anyone but yourself. Whether or not Skyrim is a success does not depend on Spore's history. The irony in your attitude is just how immature this "It's not exactly what I want, it svcks" attitude is.

Excellent, thanks. I didn't doubt the level scaling would be a vast improvement (read: correction) after Oblivion, but it's nice to have so clear a reassurance.

I'd love to know exactly how detailed and complicated it is, but I guess design/coding technicalities are beyond the scope of a general interview.

E3 svcked this year though. All it had to offer was stuff we already knew about. This interview alone has better info than we got in all of E3, which is kind of sad.

Some interesting responses on dragons here, as well-

IGN AU: If dragons can randomly attack villages, then how does the game balance itself and ensure that you're not being punished super-early in the game?

Bruce Nesmith:
Because we decide when those random events can happen and how. All of our "random" systems are actually sophisticated decision systems that use randomness as one part of the process. Random dragon attacks won't happen right away. When they first start, you will have companions with you or be able to use the environment to your advantage, and the dragon will be one of the weaker ones. As the game progresses, you fight tougher dragons and are on your own more often.

IGN AU:Dragons. Cool enemy or coolest enemy?

Bruce Nesmith:
Are you kidding? Coolest enemy! The variety of things they can do makes them one of the most fun encounters in the game. They can do bombing runs with their breath weapon. They can land almost anywhere and chase after you. They have a tail attack that can knock you back. And when you kill them, you get to absorb their soul and use it to unlock magical shout powers. How can you get cooler than that?

E3 svcked this year though. All it had to offer was stuff we already knew about. This interview alone has better info than we got in all of E3, which is kind of sad.

What we saw of the gameplay demo more than made up for the rest, though.

Modern journalism only needs an occasion, not necessarily content. This and many other interviews are of the latter kind. But what we got in gameplay footage is undeniably new.

i found it cool that if we kill an NPC one of their relatives may try and hunt us down and kill us. Then we kill them...
