And whenever someone else has host, I almost always have 2-bar. Is there any way to make yourself a better host? Or join games with only local players that will provide a good host?

What is your internet speed? It could be correlated to that and/or local.

I'm in a similar boat myself. Rarely do I get 3 bars when someone else is host, and when I am host I can usually keep everyone else consistently at 2 bars. (i.e. Average, playable, but not excellent by any means)

I know mine is related to my internet speed. 8mbps download, about 1.5 upload. I live in Montana so my choices are a bit limited, and due to distance I usually don't have a particularly near host connection. It is what it is, I've just gotten used to it.

If you have good speed, then follow tips littered everywhere else in the forum - NAT to Open, Locale set correctly, etc.
