Game Informer July 2011

Post » Thu Jun 16, 2011 6:44 pm

I just received my game informer for July today. I instantly went to the Skyrim page. They pretty much just described what we already knew from the many demos we watched during E3 but there is one mention that I figured I would share concerning horses. Not only are horses in the game (which we already knew since the E3 footage) but they apparently tweaked the actual riding experience to make it feel better. They stated it is more fluid and enjoyable than ever before. It isn't huge news but at least we know they not only brought them back but they have improved the feel of horseback riding.

I like the new animation too, they actually gallop, while in Oblivion it was just 1 2 step

Well I knew about the horses but I don't remember them stating that it looked more fluid and enjoyable.

Did you read his OP? He never said anything was new, he is starting a discussion on how much horses have improved. :)

You can instantly see they are 1000x better than Oblivion just from the 20 seconds of riding in the G4 demo. They probably won't be RDR quality, but as long as they're at least on par with Assassin's Creed, which looks to be the case, I'm good.

I wish they'd let horses carry some of your items on saddlebags or something though. It'd be a much better incentive for horses than simply traveling, I prefer walking anyway, but having my mule in tow would allow my expeditions to last longer.

I was going to say "Mods" but I remember you will be getting it on the console. I wish you guys could experience mods :(. All in the same I do agree with you man. I think that horse packs should be in.. I mean they had packs for brahmins in Fallout3 and NV. Of course, different game but it should work all the same. I just think that packs for your horses is more useful than horse armor LOL.

They even rear back on their hind legs, as you can see in the screenshot and for a brief moment during the gameplay.

Yeah I know. I never said he said anything was new.

I said "Old" because it is "old" to me. I believe it was already discussed in a foreign magazine last month, whatever magazine that confirmed horse riding.

just hope not all horses look like the one that was rode on in the e3 demo. it had reeeeeeeeeeeeeally short (and thick) legs.

hope there's still some regular racing studs for flat lands

I actually hope horses in Skyrim will handle like they do in world of warcraft... just make getting on and off of them simple and quick. And let riding them around be easy and not too realistic. In the end, horses are just a faster run speed for your character. After the 5 minutes of the ooooh and ahhhh factor about horses in Oblivion wore off, I ended up not using them; too slow getting on/off of them, too slow to get going, too slow to slow down, too slow to make turns, wonky camera control while on the horse... in short it was just too much of a hassle to ride a horse.

Indeed, we are. Or, at least this one is. :whistling:

Frankly I'm just hoping that the animations are going to be better for them all across the board. I've been riding horses since I was little, and the animations in Oblivion made me want to commit infanticide. Particularly the ones for the jumping motions..

horse variety: that's what we need. Since horses can move better, and they look better, I think we need to have more types of them(as opposed to oblivion, where they were just different colors of the same freaking horse)

What? They made it like real life? The closest thing for teen girls to six?

In any case, meh... Let the messengers use them, I'd rather walk.

Hey, that's not true. They also had different hair cuts.
Frankly, as much as I love the drafts from the demo, it would be nice to see more speed inclined horses in the works as well. I can't think of any real life equivalent off the top of my head that was developed in mountainous regions like Skyrim, but something like an Thoroughbred or Quarterhorse would be nice.

http://i.imgur.com/VSGxT.jpg concept shows a pack animal, looks like a horse...but it is just concept art though so

the horses did seem quite a bit better in the demo, but i feel every horse i buy or "buy" is going to get killed by a dragon,

armoring the horse might help, though.

I get Bethesda's games on both platforms. Everything except New Vegas, which isn't really a Bethesda game anyway. While I love that game, the technical faults didn't warrant a second purchase.

To be fair though, for every great mod, that's well thought out and pays attention to balance, there's dozens, perhaps even a hundred of the same mod, that are just utter garbage. Before I get into modding, it's nice to give the game a year or two for those types of mods to get separated out by peer review. Additionally, if Bethesda's game can't stand on it's own without mods, it's a failure as a product that's not even worth modding anyway.

What, really? Horses started and stopped instantly, without any sense of lingering momentum. This was one of the things that bugged me—that they really were just a faster run speed for your character. Controlling one didn't feel like controlling a real horse. More like a hot pink hoverboard.

And the black horses were purple. Purple. Did anyone else notice that? Is it just me? They were dark purple. Indigo, perhaps. I've never heard anyone say a word about it in all the years that Oblivion's been out (not that I've really paid a whole lot of attention)—but that's what I see when I look at the black horses. Purple. I feel like I'm crazy or color-blind or something.

Oh, I don't think that giving them the room to just think "Our fans will just mod it" is a good idea either. I would rather the game be complete upon purchase. Mods should be used to add content but not fix things that are "wrong". I agree with everything you said.
