Spell Alternate Fire Modes

Post » Fri Jun 17, 2011 1:13 am

I was thinking about how each spell is going to have different fire "modes" lets call them. I initially thought, "How could they possible have more than one spell 'mode' for "bound sword," it is a spell that spell that equips a sword to me." That led to this epiphany, bound weapon could go from my least favorite spell, to absolute favorite spell if they do what I am thinking they'll do. I'll explain:

From the demos, the max number of spell fire 'modes' is at least three. The fire spell had the "close range/self" mode of flamethrower, the "Ranged vs Enemy" version of a straightforward ranged fireball, and we were told it will have a "Ranged vs. Environment" version of a fire glyph trap.

I think what might end up happening for the bound weapons, lets say "Bound Sword" for now, is that the "close range/self" will bound a weapon to you, the "Ranged vs Enemy" will launch a summoned sword at an enemy, and the "Ranged vs. Environment" will be something like making a spike trap of blades or something.

Man, I really hope they do something like that, the spell would be versatile and sweet.

Now all I can think about is the different possibilities of fire 'modes' for spells. What does everyone hope to see?

Maybe have Conjuration spells on target, making it so you can summon them from afar.

Maybe like I stated in the other magic topic, making Telekinesis spells able to lift and throw items to do damage, but maybe add the ability to push or pull things with more force too.

I doubt they'll implement anything so elaborate for every single spell, but I've been (pleasantly) surprised by Skyrim's features before, so who knows.

What seems more likely to me (for something like weapon summoning) is a simple target variant: cast on self, cast on target. We know we can travel with companions, so it'd make sense to be able to conjure them a bound weapon.

It's also not certain that all of the "fire modes" will be utilised for every spell, nor that they'll be consistent across different spell types.

Laying down a bunch of healing rune-trap things before a fight, and then not having to switch out your weapon, but paying the price of having to keep your enemy away from it. The possibilities are endless...
Does anyone else think that runes will be handled like drain spells worked on people in Oblivion? The magicka spent cannot be regenerated, not even by potion, until the trap is detonated.
