Strange graphical anomaly...

So, I'm running into a strange graphical glitch, and hoping someone else has run into it and might be able to help.

I recently encountered it for the first time in Black Rock Cave, in the secret room with the pirate ship and ghosts you unlock by hitting the two switches on the above level of the dungeon.

If you Google Oblivion Black Rock you will find a wiki page about the area.

Basically, the NPC ghost effect is somehow conflicting with the combination of water and fog so that if any of the ghosts are contacting the water, alive or dead, whole sections or layers of the other visuals get blocked out by a visual anomaly. Parts of my bow in first person for example, disappear behind an invisible blob.

It is sort of like when you would set ugridstoload in the INI and whole sections of water would vanish, only with things other than water. Bits of the water get choppy also.

It seems like a rendering issue, so I regenerated my INI file, removed OBGE, even tried reinstalling the latest NVIDIA drivers from scratch using a driver cleaner, and nothing seems to effect it.

I haven’t changed any mods, but then it could be I just never ran into a situation with ghost shaders plus water plus fog that created the glitch before now.

I know it is the combination of ghost + water + fog because if I disable any dead ghosts in the water, the ones not in the water don’t cause the glitch. If I then drag their bodies into the water, the glitch is back.

I've experienced that too in Black Rock, was the effect something like http://i52.tinypic.com/6opjyh.jpg? Never figured it out either, would be great if the veterans can shed some light on it.

Are you both using an ATI/AMD video card? If so that's a transparency anomaly caused by bugs in how those cards handle transparent stuff. I see crap like that all the time and there's nothing that can be done about it from what I've been told. You can often see it clearly by going to a place where there's a waterfall and looking at where the foam contacts the surface - there's a "hole" where neither the foam nor the water surface is visible yet you can see everything beneath them clear as day. You can also see it sometimes if using All Natural - thatch roofing on the interior farmhouse meshes sometimes vanishes at certain angles while looking through the windows.

Yep, ATI. Thanks for the info. :) Never noticed it elsewhere, didn't look closely I guess. It was only really distracting when I come across it in dungeons.
