I recently started a new game because I wanted to finally get around to testing a mage character, which I have not *gasp* done before.
Now, since this is my first time, I lack any sort of experience with mages, and so I just wanted to present my thought process when making my character and see what you think. I calla this my "Battle Mage".
For my main skills, I picked
Destruction - In my oppinio, a must have for anyone who plans to "solve problems" with magic.
Restoration - There is somewhat of a debate about this one. On one hand, I thought, I could just use the "wait" option to regenerate my life. On the other hand, if I am in the planes of Oblivion, or in a cave full of nasty creatures, that will not work. So I finally decided to go with it, but I am still unsure.
Alchemy - Magicka and health regen potions are very useful, and it ties in nicely with destruction, since they both use intelligence.
Alteration - I though of this as a nice allrounder ability, which provides everything from unlock spells to enrage spells.
Armourer -So far, I have picked this on all my characters because it boosts endurance and keeps my armor in shape.
Illusion - I like the "light" spells and there are some later spells that looked interesting (for soicla interaction maybe?)
Heavy Armor - Boosts endurance and keeps me safe at the same time.
As you might have noticed, I did not pick a weapon skill. I generally do not use a weapon, since I am planning to rely only on spells.
My biggest concern is that when I have multiple magic skills, I might have a hard time using them all enough to level them up.
Another concern I have are the purchaseable spells - one of the reasons I never liked playing mages was that I found it diffucult to find good spells, and I do not like the system in which spells are treated like goods. I would of preferred a WoW style of approach, with a spell trainer in each city who has a collection of spells.
