Improving Oblivion's Graphics

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2011 10:01 pm

After reisntalling Oblivion, i've decided not to stick loads of mods into it first, but instead this time go more carefully and check all the mods compatabilities. Before i've even installed one mod, i'm wanting to find really good graphic mods to improve Oblivions immersion and feel.

What do people use to improve their Oblivion Graphics?

As you only asked for the graphics, I'll intentionally skip mods like DarnUI and such. Assuming you have already installed the unofficial patches, first of all you might want to replace the vanilla textures for just about everything in the game. What follows is for the GOTY edition which includes all DLCs, just skip the SI mods if you have no SI installed and your setup will be fine. Here's what you need to improve the land, buildings, trees and armour textures:

- install http://www.fileplanet.com/184103/180000/fileinfo/Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion---Qarl%5C%27s-Texture-Pack-III-Redimized-v1.0
- install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28378
- install http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/797-insanitys-improved-armoury-compilation/
- install both http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8500 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11891
- install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10487
- install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9498
- install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15245
- install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37536
- install http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23783

And that's pretty much everything you need on the textures side. If you're going to install everything above you'll need to strictly follow that install order, as some texture packages are intended to overwrite some content of the packages you've installed first. There are also minor texture replacements out there like http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36814 but they are not so necessary. Once you've finished installing everything above oblivion will look great, but there's still much to be done to improve the LOD:

- install http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2415.
- install both http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2182 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2210
- install both http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053 and http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053.

Next, install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19628, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=18305 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34199.

Finally, you really want to install http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37825 which also includes support for a lot of the "regular" OBGE shaders if you are going to use them. Personally I stick to ColorMood, HLSLbleachbypass and Godrays [see http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/175/2011053000002.jpg for what they look like once combined together].

The above is what you need to improve the look of the vanilla game, if you are in need of something special like OOO and Unique Landscapes which both add new content to the land you'll also need several patches. As always, read the readmes for the requirements needed by each mod. Ask in the mods section if you need further help.
