I never understood it. Who are we paying? Does our character just leave the gold on the altar? The same for enchanting.

You are paying the Gods of Magic, they don't make you spells for free you know. :laugh:

Now that I think about it, it actually makes no sense. It did in Morrowind where you had to pay an NPC spellmaker, not an altar.
