Blocking While Dual-Wielding

Post » Tue Jun 21, 2011 9:33 am

I'm starting to get worried by the fact that I have heard virtually NO COMPLAINING that you cant block unless you have a shield equipped. I typically don't bring up issues or voice my opinion much on the forums, but this is my main issue with the game so far and i haven't seen much discussion or complaining on this.

I would find and post a link but my audio doesn't consistently work on my laptop making it a pain trying to find what interview/demo it was said it. However if you watch any of the E3 demos its obviously that when dual (NOT DUEL) wielding swords or something of the such, the playing doesn't block.

So I'm basically wondering, am i the only one upset with this? I mean, whats the problem? I'd feel stupid to just sit there and watch somebody hack at me with a longsword and make no attempt to stop him besides just hitting him back.... If the problem is there isn't enough buttons on the controllers for consoles, my idea would be to tap both triggers. (RT and LT on Xbox 360 and corresponding on Playstation) And on PC I'm sure that there are plenty enough unused buttons to choose from.

Comments? Ideas? Discuss? If all else fails, someone atleast troll please.

Edit: If I'm wrong about this or missing a crucial detail, someone please enlighten me!

You haven't seen ANY complaining? Lolwut.

I think it'd be a good way to implement it the way Morrowind did blocking.

That's not obvious at all.
It hasn't been stated anywhere that you can't block while dual wielding.

Also, one of the screenshots shows blocking with a single sword and no shield, so you don't need a shield to block.

You're wrong about many crucial Details.

You can Block with any combination involving a Shield, a Two Handed Weapon, or a Weapon and an open hand. We have reason to believe you can't block while Dual Wielding either Weapons or Spells, or while wielding any combination thereof, though there is no direct proof yet.

I personally don't see what the big deal is if Dual Wielding can't block. Learn to dodge better, or time your attacks more effectively.

I specifically remember (or think i do) that in one demo Todd mentioned that they are forcing the player to choose between being an offensive or defensive player.

Not saying thats saying anything, it just lead me to believe you couldnt block.

And you draw such a definite conclusion out of that statement?

Could also mean that blocking isn't as effective without a shield, or that you;re unable to block arrows without a shield.

Not being able to block throws off the rhythm of combat entirely... if you can't block, you're not an offensive player: you're a dead one. No resistance vs. Stunlock = no survival. Hopefully, parrying is possible (Simultaneous attacks = recoil, instead of both hitting)

Please. All you would have to do is press both triggers at the same time, just like it works for combining two destruction or healing spells.

It could be parry like effect when you both swing your weapons at the same time.

Ohhhkayyy guys. http://www.gamingreality.com/2011/02/elder-of-scrolls-v-skyrim-new.html is where I first saw it. Not sure about the reliability of the source, but there it is anyway... Second bullet down.

Edit: Oh. And I drew such a "Definite Conclusion" because i had already heard the fact/rumor/idea floating about and just thought Todd was referencing it.

This. We see Todd holding a couple Draugr at bay without blocking just by using timed attacks to stagger them.

If dual-wielding does effectively double your potential attack speed (no idea if it does yet), then there should be a major drawback to it like no blocking. Two-handers don't do twice as much as a one-hander. So dual-wield is all-out offense with no blocking, two-hander is balanced combat with weak blocking, and sword&board is weak offense with great defense. And confused turtle is just stupid all-out defense.

Im very worried about this too and mention it every chance i get. Im very excited about making stealthy that can dual wield swords. If this isnt possible dual wield is entirely pointless.

I'm also worried about this (and a possible lack of blocking with a spell and sword style, as well). If blocking with a shield is how we've heard it would be (holding down both R1 and L1 for the PS3, RB and LB for the 360 and, presumably, M1 and M2 for the PC), then blocking with these two styles shouldn't be a problem. However, I noticed one attack in the demo while dual-wielding involved pulling back both weapons and slashing at the same time in what appears to be some sort of power attack, so that worries me. Did anyone else notice it?

Using both triggers at the same time is a Bash attack, which we see in the E3 demo. They're designed to open up enemies to powerful strikes.
