They wont use any of our ideas for the main story thats for certain.
I would like these things to happen though:

Lyons Brotherhood vs Outcasts war.
Talon Company (Along with it's employer) taking part in the war for their own profit.
To "not" deal with "save the world" crap again.
For Ashur and The Pitt to at least be mentioned, or to see caravans from them in the game.
To hear more about Eerie Stretch and Ronto.
Explain who the Smuggles in PL were.
Enclave remnants trying to integrate into society. (No hidden Enclave bunker with it's remnants scoffing about.)
A raider tribe with looted Enclave stuff that is extremely dangerous.
References to Harold and Oasis.

Its tiring how people still want a continuation of fallout 3... Its over, ended, forever, but it was great while it lasted. Moving on, each numerical sequel will be set in a different location with a different protagonist and storyline. Also, it will never be set outside of America. I won't explain why as that should be obvious. However, I would like to see a more personal story. The plot for New Vegas in my opinion was terrible. Get shot, get revenge, chose a faction, help them out, assist them in a final battle, the end. The plot for Fallout 3 was average at best. It's very hard to actually come up with a plot for Fallout, so lets hope somehow Bethesda manages to finally flesh out an intriguing storyline.

I don't want/expect/need Fallout 4 to be a direct sequel to Fallout 3, but they can't just abandon it without canonizing certain events first.

Very true, but it's not likely they'll cherry pick anything worthwhile (or anything at all) from the Spec.Sugg. thread either.

I have to agree with this.
I'd rather, if Fallout 3 is mentioned at all, it is mentioned as a subtle sidenote at most.

I just think that some things were left unresolved, like the tension between Lyons and Outcasts.
Like how raiders got Enclave gear.
Who Talon Company and Smugglers really are.
What choice was canon for Harold, cause a certain choice will likely change the east coast in the decades/centuries to come.

I just don't want them to completely ignore FO3, despite it being a complete mess.
Cause it's a mess they need to clean up.

Just like with useless skills, don't remove them, fix them.

If Bethesda were to state which 'certain events' in Fallout 3 are canon, then it’s not really Fallout. Giving the player the choice to define their own path is what this series has always been about, which is why there will never be a direct sequel to any previous entries. We don’t need Bethesda to tell us what is canon and what isn’t as we make that choice for ourselves, it’s the formula which Fallout is perhaps most known for. I’d hate if Bethesda were to turn around and tell me that the ending I earned was not canon. Each sequel will involve a different plot entirely, and I for one and grateful for this as each Fallout title is more or less its own game. Sorry to rant, though I understand your urge to know which ending may be definitive, but it will never happen.

They already did it for Fallout 1 and Fallout 2. (Well, Black Isle and Obsidian did)
So by "not" doing it would be weird.

It's been a while since I played FO3, what was unclear about Lyons vs Outcasts?
I can agree with Talon Company, though it need not be a straight reference, just a worthy extension on their "lore". They did nothing really worthwhile in FO3 to earn a mention bigger than a letter exchange via couple of "officers". Imo.
Harold seemed more like an easter egg of sorts to me. Like an ent with some druids worshipping it. Need the knife really be twisted in the wound? :P

And I'm not really suggesting that FO3 should be completely disregarded (although that does sound appealing), I just think it'd be pointlessly large effort trying to explain everything that was left shrouded there.
