FCOM Oblivion Is Owning Me :(

Post » Fri Jun 24, 2011 2:36 pm

I just started my first playthrough of fcom oblivion... and I'm getting effing owned. I'm a level 1 redguard warrior, full iron armor, shield and an iron axe. I can't kill slaughterfish for a quest, actually I can but it takes forever and I waste a lot of potions which I barely have, and I can't do dungeons because I get destroyed 1 on 1.

So what exactly do I do to get strong or geared in the beginning because everythings owning me, any quest recommendations?

When you say warrior, are you talking about the 'class' or the birthsign, or both?

Random thoughts:

You're at the very bottom of the food chain, so act accordingly. Avoid fights you can't win, which - at lvl1- means all fights with npcs. For looting/gearing I stick to monster dungeons, i.e F. Empire, F. Coldcorn. Imps are doable, raiders are not.
So avoid npc fights. You're outnumberd and/or outmatched, usually both. You have to spend a lot of ressources to get another piece of worn iron armor, not worth the trouble.

The first playthrough is the hardest, later, you have a pretty good idea about problematic spawn points. So save often, and always try to have an idea of what lies ahead of you. If you spot enemies you can't handle take a detour through the woods. If you get drawn in a fight you can't win run to the nearest guards/patrol/pilgrims.

Do the Skingrad MG recommendation. The 'weak fireball' is super useful in the beginning.

My H.armour users usually leave the cuirass at home in the beginning. Speed -being able to outrun mobs- is more important than the meager 4 AR.

I use Oblivion Xp, so I'm in the comfortable position to get my early levels by questing/reading, well basically everything except fighting. Dunno about vanilla leveling, I guess you have to grind a bit.

Have fun.

thanks for the advice, although I'm thinking of remaking my character since he's only level 1, I think it was kinda pointless picking both blade and blunt.

And I must say, even though this is very difficult - it's a lot funner than the original, since a challenge is always fun. :P

I was thinking of making a spellsword with these stats

Heavy Armor
Armorer
Sword
Destruction
Restoration (or Alchemy?)
Block
Athletics

Dunmer
Warrior Birthsign

Can you critique this build?

That's a good build, though swap restoration with alchemy, so you can raise your intelligence and restore magicka and health.

You can actually fight npcs, though only bandits. IDK how hard the others make the game, as I play with only OOO.
The crumbling mine south of Chorrol is a good place to start, then Sercen West of Roxey Inn, just alternate between the two. If you get in trouble in Crumbling mine, just run out and the guards will happily kill them for you :D. In Sercen there is a rock which you can jump and they can't, then freely kill them with flare.

I don't play with FCOM, but I play with OOO and MMM, which is very similar.

The main points about this is this:
  • The deeper you go into dugeons the harder they get, in general.
  • Also the further you go from a city the harder the enemies get, in general.
  • And also the OOO reduces level scaling. So not every enemy is scaled to your level.

So the key is to not try to clear out every dungeon your stumble upon. Or at least not go very deep.

A good starting dungeon is the first level of Fatback Cave near the Imperial City. That has three levels. The first level is relatively easy. The second could be difficult until you get to a higher level. The third has "bosses" that are nearly impossible at very low levels.

The Alyied ruin near the Imperial City main bridge is a good starting dungeon. Also the nearby Ft Nikel and Ft Virtue.

I recommend staying away from Dznots cave. That has some very nasty enemies at lower levels.

With FCOM, sometimes it makes sense to bravely run away. And not go very deep into dungeons at first. One of the satisfying things about OOO is that if an area is too hard, once you level up a few times get better skilled and equiped, and the you can go back and wipe the floor with the enemies that seemed horrible at lower levels. That gives you sense of accomplishment that you don't get in the unmodded game.

You have a point as it's a good idea to focus on one kill skill with OOO/FCOM, although I'd say go for both if you think it sounds fun - it's not like it will cripple your char.

I vote for Restoration as Major btw - it levels so extremely slowly (and is very useful).

Exactly what I was going to say and I'm playing FCOM. My very first dungeon is always Vilverin so I basically try out new builds on bandits. Of course, preferably one on one or just a couple at a time. :toughninja:

Anyway, check out http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1088301-beginners-tips-for-ooo/ and http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/ooospoilers.html.

Also, have you checked what difficulty you're playing on? Perhaps it is inadvertently upped - and FCOM on high difficulty with a low level char can be very hard. (And the opposite. I remember a guy who could kill anything and everything easily. And then it turned out that he had the difficulty at 0...)
