I just started playing daggerfall

I decided to check out daggerfall mainly because i found out how big the map is, but i also see a lot of people talk highly about it around here.

Upon trying it out i found magic to be incredibly non user friendly and difficult. I hit backspace, select shock, press enter, get close to the rat, then right click, then do it again. If it suposed to be that much work to use magic or am i missing out on a much easier method?

Also, i made a breton mage who had about 90 intellect and 42ish destruction upon finishing the character creation. After trying to shock the rat 4 times or so, the rat was still alive and i was out of magicka. Is that normal or am i doing something wrong?

Is levitation as epic as it was in morrowind?

Due to the insane difficulty ive had with magic, i tried a melee character and im really impressed by the melee combat considering how old the game is and how poor it was in morrowind. However enemies with sheilds seem to randomly have rediculously high chances to block me. Is that just bad luck (or rather, a low long blade skill/maybe agility?) or is there some small difference that shows that im likely going to be blocked (ie in oblivion where someone is blatently in a blocking stance) that im just not noticing?

Also my last question, is there any way to get this to work with a 360 controller?

Overall im enjoying the game a ton and im actually more excited about experiencing it then i am about experiencing skyrim. I just hope magic isnt as bad as it currently feels.
