Spell mechanics you'd like to see outside the norm?

Post » Sun Jun 26, 2011 3:06 am

From other games or just general ideas.

I'd like to see -

Spells that are timeless buffs kept up by reducing your mana pool
Cloud style AoE spells that linger for a duration debuffing, obscuring vision, damaging, etc.
Charge based spells, for example buffs that lasts until you take X number of hits, or until you hit something X times, and so on.

I'd like mixing and combining spells to an extent. I'm sure they wouldn't overdo it, but two hand, two spells, charged? What happens? I just think it's an interesting concept.

I would like to see an enchantment spell that substituted magicka for uses in a magical item

You just finished off a giant frost spider and your fire axe is completely drained of energy

You left all of your full soul gems at your house

And what is hovering above you but a frost dragon

As as stop gap measure you should be able to throw a few uses back into your weapon straight from your magicka pool

I thought the whole soul gem thing was really clunky in Oblivion, so I think this is a good idea as well. Just to recharge my enchanted axe I need to use a spell I had to buy to drain a spirits soul which I have to find and transfer it into a soul gem I randomly found to slightly recharge the uses on my axe which still needs repaired. Mleh.

requires a rare regent to cast, spells of this variety would have to be very powerfull. the resource would have to be difficult to obtain, expensive, hard to find, craftable by alchemy etc.

A cautious hells yeah to this idea.

I think it would need to be a real "last resort" kind of thing though, with the downside of being that your Magica did not recharge for a full day as you have just voluntarily bled off a part of your soul to feed an items enchantement..

That brings up the question of welkynd stones for me too now...Are there gonna be any?

HELL YEAH..

Perk of conjuration: Double handed Soul trap feeds directly into weapons?

Off-topic, but ever so slightly: I would like to see the double handed lightning spell casting effect be like this.

You direct a chain of lightning into the one hand.
the lightning forms a long lightning bolt
which you then throw at the opposition.

I like the idea of draining magika to re buff the enchantment. But as somebody said, what you're doing ,lore wise, is putting your own soul in the object. It should only be for really dark magicians. It needs something negative too.

to the other idea of chain lightning. I say Hell no, I don't wanna be zeus. I want kind of star-wars-emperor chain lightning. Like in the game Nox. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=midrn-8hwwA he uses it at 8:22

Hell yeah, to the suggestions above.

Chain Lightning was always one of my favs, the same with expanded fireballs.

The spells that hurt enemies by distance was beautiful, the closest got a real hurting, enemies a step behind still got pain and even some uglies in the outskirts of a battle could get a bruise.

Really, really want something like this.

There was a mod, name of which slipped out of my memory now. Anyway, it provided possibility of so-called "conduits" as an alternative to basic enchanted weaponry. A conduit is basically a weapon which automatically casts "on touch" damage spell when hits, using your magicka pool. In my opinion, this is awesome idea and it would be great if it will be implemented in Skyrim.

Nah nah nah... an actual perk only relating to the soul trap spell. You cast that on someone, and it soul traps them without needing soul gems, but it's instantaneous.

Be cool to be Zeus... Star Wars Emperor Chain Lightning was SO last decade. It's been done to death.

I find it sort of weird that you need the souls of creatures to power magical weapons and armors instead of just magic... ya know? Is there a specific reason in lore why only Souls work?

If i was a mage in that world I would try to find an alternative method than stealing souls, lol

I believe that it comes from the idea that you have bound the soul of a Scamp from the realm of Oblivion into your weapon, in order that your weapon can let loose a fireball. Everytime it does that, it uses up a bit of the soul of the scamp, until there is nothing left.

So stealing souls is THE best method.

Force lightning.

Or, more specifically, lightning spells that form an arc between you and your opponent, rather than just a projectile that does shock damage.

Maybe we'll be able to summon more than one creature at a time this time around. I'd like a small squad of skeletons following me as a master conjurer.

One thing I have pondered is the ability to use even stronger spells by having detrimental effects on the player reduce the magicka cost. Let's say you're moderately skilled at destruction and want to cast a 50 pt fire spell, but it costs too much magicka. So how about adding 25 pts of damage to yourself, and the magicka cost cuts in half (or whatever seems fair). Or, restore your health at the cost of draining an attribute for a while. This would open the door for so many possibilities for creative spells and for cleverly maximizing your spell power.

I would like to make a character based on the hero in orgismo... but I doubt they will put a cast on target orgism spell in.

I'd like to see the "X + Y / Z levels" brought back for both effect and duration. In Oblivion the spells - both sold and made - were a huge dissapointment for me.

Return to this formula would also make it unnecessary to make new versions of spells every 2-3 levels - no more flooding your spellbook with stuff you will never use again.
