Items not appearing in world

Post » Sun Jun 26, 2011 3:03 pm

Hey there,

I installed the GECK and patched it yesterday after I hadn't touched it in a few years and a few computer changes. I have previously made houses, travel markers and various items that I played with in both Oblivion's CS and Fallout 3's GECK.

I started to make something again yesterday and saved everything and went to test it only to find none of my additions were in the world. I checked to make sure my data file was among the .bsa files, made sure the box was checked under Data Files when I started the launch screen but I still see nothing in the game. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong because I haven't done anything differently from my last modding spree yet nothing appears to be showing in-game. :-\

1. Make sure your game version and GECK version are compatible.
2. Where did you place the stuff?

Checking the game version? Do the different version have an affect on each other? I didn't know there were compatibility issues with the different version, but I'm pretty sure both have all the official patches.

I put my stuff nearby the Citadel because I didn't feel like walking to the middle of nowhere while I'm still building it. I double-checked the location before I went looking again and still nothing there.

Being that you have not used the GECK program for a few years, there might be some necessary, quiet things you have forgotten. Maybe try skimming through the Bethesda GECK tutorials and ensure you are doing what you are doing correctly?

Personally, this advice has been useful for myself. For example, I believe I was doing navmesh after awhile of not using it, and things weren't working out; but when I looked on such tutorial as a refresher, I found some important information -- the kind that makes you go, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! I am so stupid!". XD

Well, it wasn't working so I tried just placing a Gauss Rifle on a rock near where my door and travel marker are theoretically supposed to be. I went to the Wasteland worldspace, clicked on the Citadel cell (or Pentagon, can't remember what it is right now), moved myself in the preview window, dragged the item from the item list into the preview window then hit F so it dropped to the ground. Done. I go look for it and nothing's there.

The drag into the preview window thing has worked for me since Morrowind's CS... so I have no idea why it's not happening now.

I'll try to play around with the GECK some more when I have a chance, and maybe I'll trying putting something down in Oblivion's CS too.

Sorry to double post, but I did try just placing an item down in Oblivion and it worked fine and I started a new plugin file with the GECK and that seemed to work fine. I'm happy that at least I remember how to do that, but I don't know why the stuff wasn't appearing before. :-\

If it shows up again I'll come back, but otherwise thanks for the input everyone. :)

EDIT: And now any doors I linked don't show up in the world. :-\

1. You need to use a clean save game. Doors are persistant references and can cause problems if you have a dirty save game.
2. Yes, game version. If your game is older than the GECK version making the mod, it will not load the mod. Although, I thought the GECK would not load either. Is 'anything' from your mod loading?
3. When I said 'where', you need to say where you put it. What worldspace?

Ug! The clean saves. Maybe that was it. I don't save anything when I'm testing but maybe I'm missing something from somewhere and as a result now things aren't showing up. I didn't think just adding content would be an issue. Maybe I'll make a new game with just official content, get to where I want to go and see what happens.

It's in the Wasteland worldspace. Well, I have some new things to try so I'll get around to those when I can.
