Just downloaded the original game

Post » Mon Jun 27, 2011 5:05 am

Hi, after looking at gameplay footage on Youtube I decided to try the original game. I seem to have a problem though, the graphics are of a very low resolution compared to that which I saw on YT, to such an extent that some of the graphics are made up of small brightly coloured blocks and that's just from comparing the intros. Is there a way to rectify this?

Its very common. Usually changing your desktop to a solid cover solves it. Should this fail search this board and you'll find a multitude of other solutions.

I think you might have to lower the resolution of your display to a 16-bit color sceme, but I haven't played that game on a modern computer. :brokencomputer:

I set my monitor to 16- bit but that didn't help, unfortunately.

In the Options screen in the game, there is a button on the top called Screen. It may be abbreviated. Click it and change the resolution to 16 bit there. If that doesn't work, you may need to download the Fallout 1 High Resolution Patch 2.2b http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=1273 The patch is what finally worked for me.

I've been playing around and tried everything mentioned but I can't find the option screen you mentioned, there is a preferences screen but there is no screen button on it?

The button I'm thinking of is in the top center of the screen, just to the right of the words Game Preferences. If you don't see it, then I bet it was put there by the resolution patch. If that's the case, you may have to download the patch and install it.

Add: I just read through the patches readme. The screen button I'm talking about was added by the patch. Sorry I sent you on a wild goose chase, it's been awhile since I installed it.

Good lookin' out guys.

Did you get it on steam, if so, PM me and I'll walk you through changing the ddraw CFG, which is the source of your problem.

I had this problem too, but from GOG. Do this, it'll fix it.

Yeah, so if you got it from GOG, I think TheTuninator would be better suited to walk you through changing the CFG, if you need to be walked through it, if you got it through Steam, I'm your man.

Sorry but there's a new problem, at the beggining of the game, with the guy that talks to you, his image keeps tearing and there seems to be no smooth outlines to anything, it all seems blocky?

That can't be fixed, but it is only for cutscenes, thankfully.
