MGE not letting morrowind start? Please help!

Post » Tue Jun 28, 2011 1:08 pm

Hi everyone!

I made a post a few days ago about the MGE and was brought in the right direction for downloading it. Everything went smoothly, i followed the instructions exactly as they were on the page and got no error messages or anything. The first problem I had was after all the installing and whatnot is done I am told to open the MGEgui application. At first, it wouldnt start it would just come up with a window that says "MGEgui has stopped working, windows is searching for a solution" but it wouldnt find one. I tried changing it to the other version, the more stable one, and that let the MGE open fine. After i got into it i clicked the Best Quality button so it would auto do it for me. After that, I went into Steam (I have Morrowind GoTY on Steam) and when I went to launch it from games it just comes up with the message "Morrowind Launcher is not responding." and then windows never finds a solution. I tried launching it as an Admin from the folder and i get the message, "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_30.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

So, now im in a bit of a pickle haha. Anyway if anyone could tell me what i did wrong and how i could fix it, that would be greatly appreciated!

p.s. i did change the files of morrowind bloodmoon and tribunal to their original 2002/2003 dates
and i have Morrowind GoTY that was downloaded from steam

You are missing one of the direct x 9 files that mge needs. Make sure you load the latest version.http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/DirectX-9.0c-Redistributable.shtml

thank you, i installed it and downloaded it and everything, but it still didnt help. It told me i had to buy something..? :banghead: And after the scan that apparently updated it, morrowind still will not launch from steam and i still get the same error message when trying to run it straight from the file :o is there anything else i can do?

Have you disabled the steam overlay?

Right click 'Morrowind' in your Steam games list, choose 'Properties' and UNTICK 'Enable Steam Community In-Game' then click close.

See if that helps.

Just my 2c, but seeing as how you've done everything so far and keep getting frustrated because things aren't working properly, it might be time to step back and start over with a clean slate. Not having used Steam, I don't know if this is an option for you..

I'll add what seem like gotchas I've seen.
First, your O/S - from what I've read, it seems like there are some issues between Win 7 if you're using that and where MW is installed. I use WinXP, so my experience is limited to that.
2nd - if I remember correctly, MGE wants two things installed before you even begin using MGE - the DirectX 0.9c update AND Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable. I don't see you mentioning if you had doen that. My recollection needs to be confirmed, of course.
3rd - you might try starting mgegui.exe from inside your game folder, not use a shortcut. MGE troubleshooting pages say starting MGE from a shortcut can cause problems. Similar issues using morrowind launcher and morrowind but these might only apply if you're running multiple copies of the game. I am and ran into different problems such that I'm trying to discipline myself to run mgegui, morrowind launcher and morrowind.exe that are in the game folder and to not use a shortcut.

The only encouragement I can give you is that I use MGE ver 3.8 ("stable version") and have had many occasions to clean out the old and start over again following the steps listed at MGE's sourceforge pages.

One other thing, if you get the message that a file is missing, use your directory search tool (I presume Windows explorer) to see if the file is somewhere else on your pc. If it is, that may give you some other clue about what's going on.

One other suggestion, make yourself a checklist of the steps MGE lists to install it, including the pre-requisite files. It may seem redundant, but checklists do help.

Step 1)

Remove the game.

In Steam, right click Morrowind and choose 'Properties'. Click the 'Local Files' tab and choose 'Delete Local Game Content' (Make sure you backup your saves first).

Step 2)

Close Steam completely - including in the system tray.

Step 3)

Locate the installation folder - it's usually something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Morrowind - and delete the entire Morrowind folder. Browse up a couple of folders to the root Steam folder, locate Steam.exe, right click it and choose 'Properties', then 'Compatibility'. Click 'Change settings for all users'. Click 'Run this program as an administrator'. Click Ok, then Ok again.

Step 4)

Download the latest DirectX 9.0C Installer, run it, and allow it to complete:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

Step 5)

REBOOT

Step 6)

Open Steam and download Morrowind again (don't worry, you've purchased it so this will be free) - Just right click Morrowind in your games list and click 'Install Game'

Step 7)

Once the installation has finished, make sure that Morrowind runs BEFORE you add ANY mods or MGE.

Step 8)

If Morrowind DOES run, then close it down, relocate that morrowind directory you found earlier, and take a backup copy if possible.

Step 9)

Now you can install MGE again. Make sure when you do so that you run the installer as an Administrator (right click the setup.exe, choose 'Run as Administrator...')

And remember, after running the Set-up you also have to Install the files. (with the Installer that the Set-up created)
Otherwise MW will still say missing d3dx9_30.dll

Actually that link should allow you to download dxwebsetup.exe, which should act as an installer and downloader.

It should scan your system for DirectX components, then will download and install anything that is missing or requires an update.
