Many CTDs and Savegame Corruption

As the title says, i have a problem with persistant CTDs and sometimes my savegame won't load.

The CTDs appear the most random times, sometimes when talking to people, entering interiors but most often when traveling with the silt striders and loading a new exterior

As to the saves:
I stopped quicksaving and i don't overwrite savegames anymore which reduced the problem dramatically but doesn't solve it completly.

I have the newest versions of the Vampire mods and Rise of House Telvanni + 1.5 Compability installed, Mlox just doesn't recognize them


I use mgeXE but it seems to work fine and doesn't cause (most) of the crashes

if you arent already doing it, dont ever reload savegames. Restart the game completely. Solved all CTDs for me. (i overwrite saves too with no problems).


Edit: It looks like thhere are a couple of files missing in the Better clothes mod, install it again, and i think it has some patches too.

In your warnings .txt the better clothes errors are ok and don't affect anything. You should get Wrye Mash to clean and fix the other errors. It can save a lot of headaches.

yeah it happens even modless as the game progresses. With more mods earlier. It seems Morrowind doesnt do proper garbage cleaning. A lot of games cant do that for some reason. Also, dont die, hehe.

are any of my mods know for causing a lot of CTDs? I'm currently inside the hermitage, have 3 different saves there, 2 normal ones, 1 autosave and all of them crash upon loading. Even with MGE disabled

Now im not an expert in mod conflicts but there are lot of strange things going on in that list. Why for example do you have Uvirith's Legacy installed twice, both the 1.1 and 2.0 versions. Is this an old install? Time to reinstall perhaps and get rid of some intrusive stuff with too much scripting. Mods will cause crashes ofc. I had k_in_tent.esp, but than disabled it, didnt like the warnings it produced. Replaced it with http://princessstomper.wordpress.com/2009/03/24/pocket-homes/ by princess stomper. Although thats probably not related now.

Use Wrye Mash to eliminate all those warnings about dependencies since last save:

1 - go to the mods tab
2 - highlight a non-green one
3 - click the far right dependancy list
4 - click save
5 - verify its green now
6 - repeat until all the mods are red.

This will get rid of all of that.

Use Wrye Mash to clean up your savegames. This is likely your problem...you probably have some corruption from uninstalled mods in the savegame, causing issues. Mash can attempt to fix it. It can't hurt (copy an existing savegame and try a cleanup on your backup, then try to load the backup into the game). If you get stability from it, that's your problem.

Check Uvirith's Legacy, as already mentioned. I see an mlox reference, which makes me feel your order must be in pretty good shape. I'm a bit concerned about the masterindex fix in there and not seeing the masterindex plugin that it patches...check that, it could be a crash issue.

The advice about never loading a savegame is...odd. Save games are there for a reason, for you to reload from. Now, saving OVER previous save-games has been known to cause issues, you really should always start a new save each time you save, then prune the ones you don't want to keep.

Building up Uvirith's Legacy is just the fix to use Building up Uvirith's Grave together with Uvirith's Legacy. K_in_tent isn't a portable home, it's just interior weather sounds for tents

Could the Mana Regen be a Problem?

Reloading on the over hand means resetting variables and rebuilding stuff. Anything which is left in memory from the previous save, due to a programming glitch, memory leak or just unclean purging will cause instabilities and crashes.

No links, I've only read it in passing as fairly well believed from early on in MW. Something about MW writing to existing files rather than starting new ones, but don't quote me on it. Your assertion about it being only an OS issue is incorrect....the app has to interface the file write down to the OS, and it has to know if it is writing a new file or over-writing an existing file.

The MCP has a tick mark to attempt to "fix" it, which supposedly solves most (if not all) of this problem....however, I'm cautions with savegames, so I don't leave that to chance. Do you have the MCP savegame fix enabled?

I see MCP fixing loading errors, and proper cleaning savegames on mod change. It doesnt state anything about fixing saving problems. Or fixing garbage collector subroutines. I tend to believe its just an urban legend.

Well, an app can delete and then create a file. Or open an existing file for writing. So you are saying Morrowind opens a savefile, maintains its structure and just changes its variables. This certainly could cause crashes. But its rather hard to believe it is actually working this way, rather than a simple delete&create. Would be quite interesting to know more.
