I recently re-installed Oblivion (steam version). Despite that it worked perfectly a few months ago, Oblivion now does not work.

After hitting Play in the Steam Library, the normal steam loading pop-up pops up, and the Launcher music plays, but I immediately get the error message:

"Oblivion Launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience..."

The launcher never actually shows up before the error message appears.

I tried:
- Re-installing the game again
- Re-installing steam (after deleting the Steam folder after un-installation)
- Updating my video card drivers
- Re-installing DX9.0C
- Launching from the Oblivion folder
- Removing the "My Games/Oblivion" folder from My Documents

I never installed any mods. I run Windows XP 32.

Any ideas?

It may be an audio codec incompatibility. Do you have FFDShow installed perhaps?
