Crytek or nvidia or both? Issues with high end rig

Post » Wed Jul 06, 2011 1:44 pm

I am running probably about as maxed out as you can get with hardware. Sure I could go EVGA SR2 and drop in dual 990X's and a couple 590's, but that is a notch above what I run now.

EVGA Classified 3 motherboard
Core i7 990X CPU
4 - GTX 580 GPU's
12GB Dominator GT RAM
Fully water cooled with an extreme cooling system

This is the basics and what matters in this discussion. My question is who needs to take notice and fix the issues many face with this latest released patch and DX 11 upgrade?

ISSUE OVERVIEW:
Running 3-WAY SLI with GTX 580's and a fourth as a dedicated PhysX (yeah I know its overkill, but I would rather kill a fly with an a-bomb than a fly swatter). Prior to this patch and high res release I was able to play Crysis 2 full out and without many glitches. Video was pretty smooth and enjoyable. I could not wait for the DX11 release as well as the high def pack to increase the eye candy (though still wanting to know where my AA settings are under Advanced Settings).

So recently I changed out from a Asus Rampage III to this EVGA Classfied 3, which resulted in loading a fresh OS on my RAID 0 driven OCZ Vertex 2 SSD drives, installing all my programs including Crysis 2 in my dual SSD Mushkin Deluxe Callisto's in RAID 0. This also means I did a clean initial install of Nvidia's latest drivers. I went from initial Crysis 2 install to the new 1.9 patch and the DX11 patch and the high res patch, foregoing the previous patches because the 1.9 was to include it all - right? EA Manager never asked if I wanted to install anything less than 1.9 when I first fired up Crysis 2.

So here I am thinking "Wow, time to play the game like we expected when it was first released. Oh well better late than never I suppose" so the anticipation was high and I was very excited to see the power of my machine handle the beauty Crytek released to us - and beautiful it was.

I think the visuals are amazing and wonderful - if I stand still.
I can see the enhancements that was made to this game and it is awe inspiring - if I stand still in places to observe the beauty

I have motion blurr turned off thinking it would solve my issues - it does not.

I have a massive stutter as I move that is like a shadow copy of the frame just slightly off alignment. When I stop moving everything aligns and it is beautiful, but as I move I get flickers in some textures and this blurred effect that is not motion blur, but one that gives me a serious headache while trying to play. I have never experienced this any game before or after.

Then comes the "WTF" moment when I turn realy fast or the new scene is going to load, or when I first load a scene, or whatever the action - all of a sudden the GPU's quit producing video. My screen turns off and I cannot seem to get back to Windows. I have to power down, then restart to get video back - the game just crashes on me but even CTRL+DEL+ALT does not work, it will not bring up my options screen or anything, the PC just simply stops producing video.

Running 3 GTX 580's in 3-WAY SLI and a 1920x1080 resolution, I should be tearing this game up in all its glory. This is probably a mixture of Nvidia drivers and Crytek rushing out a solution to the whinning comunity. I think this buggy patch and release was just as detremental to Crytek as releasing Crysis 2 without it - its not looking good guys.

When I go a single GTX 580, turn off SLI, things get much better - but that is not why I have 4 GTX 580's in my machine. That is not why I bought into Nvidias SLI hype and performance claims that 3 are better than one, and 4 just makes it that much sweeter. I have to point some of this blame to nvidia for not making solid drivers to handle this release, and yet Crytek did release it with many bugs.

Why can I not put a reflex sight on my sniper rifle any more in campaign?
Why do I have this massive stutter as I move?
Why does this game crash on me at random intervals?
Why are there times no weapons, hands or anything else shows until I change a weapon, then suddenly things appear?
Where is our AA for PC gamers that want to crank up the visuals a tad more?
Where are my console commands to "displayinfo" and see real time FPS stats when gaming like in Crysis 1 and Warhead?
Any estimated date to release a real working patch?

Right, Try;

Turn PhysX to CPU in the Nvidia CP
Use 270.61 drivers or a step or 2 back further
In game menu for graphics, post processing switch between high and ultra while in game.
Motion blur off fixed me.

First up nice rig. 2nd I hope you've got at least a 1500w PSU and OC your CPU over 4 gig. 1920x1080 3way 580 Sli, lol. You want to go surround vision or get your self a 30" HD monitor to make those cards work. I think you are bottle necking tryig to run on such a small ressy. I'm Tri Sli 480's, on a Dell 30" they run it easy and switch to 3 x 24" surround to make them work and give myself full emersion of the game.

Plus how do you run Tri Sli when you say your running 4 x 580's? I didn't think you could Tri Sli while having 4 of the same GPU's in a system with 1 screen. I can surround vision with 2 and use the last for physx but not Sli and last for PhysX when only using my dell. With or with out a bridge.

Many folks are experiencing the MP stuttering, and no matter what you do or how uber your rig is it ain't gonna fix it, same happened with FEAR3 when it was released before the first patch fixed it.
So all we can do is wait for nvidia or Crytek to fix it.

So I'm running a Quad SLI GTX 590 on a 4th Way Classified mobo. You Gotta get have a great PSU! I can't repeat the problems I had with a 1.1k PSU which was rated by nVidia to work.

I agree; just set up Tri Sli and let nVidia Control Panel tool auto select the physics. I'd wonder if you had the pci slots to run 4 580's correctly on that board. I could be wrong.

The current drivers seem to be working fine, latest release 275.33. Also, go onto the EVGA forums and nVidia forums to check for known fixes. You might be able to step back to 261, and install enhancement 38 or 39 (can't remember). But then the question rises about integration with Patch 1.9.

It doesn't sound like you are experiencing flickering, but stuttering. Uneven frame rate progress? I'd be looking at compatability issues, drivers, PSU, that moBo.

Do you have vSync on/off?

CNT+DEL+ESC hasn't worked since Patch 1.9. cnt+alt+Del should work to get to Task Manager. I experienced freezes also with my Quads, which required reboots, and mobo boots, and stress. When I upgraded to SilverStone 1500 I see few crashes; they do happen but are codex decoder compatibility issues.

EVGA mobos are great if they are working correctly. I have a 590, a 790 FTW Digital and the 4 Way Classified. Upgrade your mobo to the 4 way classifed; there are a few still available in Chicago, I think. Then you could run all 4 of your cards in SLI

[edit] Believe me 3 are better than one, and 4 is usually better than 3 [/edit]

What powersupply do you have. I would guess your system is running out of juice and that's causing the problems. Do you experience the stutters in single player or only multiplayer. I too find that the motion blur just makes the game look worse and found it did give me a slight headache last night after playing for many hours. Today I turned off motion blur and continued progression in single player. I Still have no discomfort after 4 hours and noticed that the visuals look much more crisp and vivid. I must say, this game looks amazing with everything maxed, especially so in the later levels.

Before i get started you cant put 2 990x processors on the same board. They must be Xeons.

First off you are using WAY to many GPUs. You are most likely getting MAJOR scaling issues, also considering the 580 is still new drivers are still needing to be optimized.

Also i did not see it but did you turn off v-sync?

yes I know dual CPU's would be the Xeon versions - I was just making a silly point - sry, should have been more direct and technically accurate.

I will try a clean install of older drivers to see if that fixes the issues.

I am running a Silverstone ST1500 1500W PSU
I am running three Asus 24" 2ms GTG Monitors - have tried on both single 1920x1080 as well as 5980x1080 - same effect
PhysX is dedicated to the 4th GPU (yeah I know its overkill)
System is set up for 3-WAY SLI/vSync is turned off

I am running the EVGA Classified 3 (E770) board as well - it handles 4 GTX 580s if one is dedicated as PhysX

CPU is running at 4.6Ghz stable and I do not mean simply bench marked at that, but really stable, I run this machine at that speed daily. Benchmarking is done at 4.9GHz + - Temps never get past 65c under hours of gaming, even Crysis 1 and Warhead do not push this system past 65c on CPU and 48c on GPU's when I have the system full out cooling and on full load. Temps are not an issue.

I have a stout UPS as well that Frank is tied to and dedicated to. All other peripherals are run off different UPS's. Frank's UPS is on a dedicated 30A circuit. Power should not be an issue either as the Silverstone was just replaced with a new one.

Well as strange as it sounds - Frank runs this game better at 5980x1080 than he does at 1920x1080. I also found that in Surround I had the CPU pegged as the dedicated PhysX instead of the 4th GPU - problem solved. Now it runs smooth as butter fully maxed out on all three monitors.

Now if Crytek could get the HUD and game info in the center screen.......................too far too see in the far right and left corners now. Need that resolved please and this will be a great campaign for three screens - wow!

This is wierd...why do you guys use one card for PhysX in a game which does not support it?

Nope not yet, some frame/packet loss on DDD during Orbitals, that's it.

Looks like a solid setup, which comes back to original guesses. Drivers, cards, and Mobo. Check the other forums, EVGA and nVidia, for known issues. I'll double check the 3 Way manual, got it here somewhere on PDF. Also, there is an PCI auxillary molex on the 4 way, i think, to add extra power to the PCI structure. Do you have that too?

Also, are you getting any Mobo error codes when you lock up/ or black screen? What are the codes?

Yah! I'd look at whether that Mobo can run 4x 580.

I'd guess you're running slots 2,3,4, with the physics last?

Also, give EVGA tech support a call, they are the best in the business.

It would be my guess to, but not because of the PSU, but because the PCI structure isn't getting enough juice, or design capacity to run 4 powerful cards. But It could be wrong. I could just be a problem board.

Return to Crysis
