How random is the bot AI?

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 2:21 am

I notice that usually bots in games all have the same tendencies. They're all clones it seems. Anyone seen a bot with maxxed-out rushing focus, defensive sniping, etc.? The extremes where they focus an insane amount on a certain style of gameplay. Some games let you mod their A.I. so it's more varied or have customization of them in a menu.

Has anyone seen much variation or extremes in A.I.?

I was one-shot-incapacitated by a sniping Engineer bot... I was sprinting around as a Light (like, actually holding down L2 sprinting) then I was nailed in the middle of a clearing seemingly out of nowhere by a Barnett. It was on Rank 4 and I assume he buffed his own weapon and then shot me from miles away, since I didn't see any other movement from his general direction. And, as you'd expect from bots, he shot me again to kill me.

So watch out playing as a Light.

The bots in this game I find are suprisingly good (considering they are bots), but sometimes they can be annoying or quirky, like being right beside you and not throwing a revive. But I guess that occurs because either they have now supplies, or they prioritise the team performance over the player's treatment.

So I do think that they all run on the same base code (effectlively clones) but are randomly assigned a body type, abilities, and weapons, that influence their effectiveness and navigation routes in a map; however, I think their battlefield tactics are mainly derived from the players implementation of the objective wheel, though I am unsure about whether this hold to the enemies.

So foreinstance, if your a class that can complete the primary objective and have the wheel set to completing the primary objective, the bots will take escort mission on you and will crowd around you more. If you change the wheel to a command post capture, the bots don't crowd around you, but I find the enemy bots doesn't hunt you as much either.

I remember playing the game innitially and trying to frantically do everything because I though the bots would be incompetent (this was probably why so many reviewers dished this game, expecting the bots to assist the player rather than assist the team), but then I discovered that you get more xp if you select the objective in the wheel before doing the objective, and you can also activate streaming xp (the escorting and guarding missions) and their multiplyer upon kills performed when gaining streaming xp; so its actually more advantageous (in long and short term) to play with the bots: buffing them, escorting them, setting traps, providing covering and suppression fire.

* To help with the above here's a great tip they didn't put in the manual: tap up when aiming at an objective to automatically assign yourself to it. if you don't aim at anything, you will automatically assign yourself to either guarding or completing the main objective

[EDIT]

Additionally, I think that the bots react to the scoreboard, so if you are first place (highest xp) in a match with bots I find that the AI is more likely to buff you and the enemies are more likely to hunt you down. I also find that bots are reciprocal, so if you buff them they are more likely to buff you in return. They also react to whether you have the "reinforments" or "wait for medic" option when incaped.

The only thing I found dumb about the bots is that they use deployables in pretty much the same locations. I keep playing the early launch level and a bot will always plant a turret on the platform above the crane controls if able to, in exactly the same position. Also I have never seen a bot use the claptrop grenade (???)

The bots do behave differently.

There's always a few bots who stick to one class the whole match, and a few who will change based on the circumstances. The class-specific Medics always seem to be the first ones on-scene when teammates start going down, and the career Soldiers are slightly more consistent about using their buffs and taking advantage of Flashbangs.

Also, Jolly is awesome any time I've seen him as a Medic, and Wedgwood is a pretty good all-rounder.

I don't know about specific bot behaviour, but I know they change behaviour and it's scripted!

I have a few charachters now and I always play through the campaign before I go online. Every time I play Resort as the Security the same thing happens:

- I go engineer build mounted turrets and defences and try to hold them off.
- I check the lower door all the time and make sure they don't get it open.
- Usually I try to fend them off the whole 10min.

But here it comes, the last 2min of those they start rushing and they miraculously get through my defences all the time. It's like they all group up and rush towards objectives, first the lower door then the pillar. And obviously my team's bots svck big-time and can't do sh*t so I have to do everything myself. But before you know it one spawn later the piller room is filled with all 8 enemy bots.

Do they step-up a notch because it's just the first objective? Maybe the Developers scripted such a strategy so you would see the full map on a campaign playthrough. Obviously my strategy is good, because it works every time up untill those last 2mins.

I have to say my biggest WTF?! moment with bots has to be at Sec Tower, as soon as we get
Nacheyev out and have to escort him I high tail it to the enemy spawn area, the clearing before
the ramp with the 2 exits one up top and one through the broken wall, I set up a Turret and both mines
covering the upper door and hate on anyone coming out the bottom door, it's a good strategy because
while I can't stop all of them at least half are paying attention to me and ergo leaving my team alone,
but the WTF!? moment comes when I've used up most of my ammo and like clockwork this lone soldier
(I like to call 'em Leeroy the Epileptic) treks halfway accross the map, through enemy fire, past enemy squads,
to give lil' ol' me a single ammo pack, and then stands there looks around a few times like he woke from a trance
scream s out I'LL PROTECT NACHEYEV!! runs back through enemy fire and gets offed

Well, occasionally friendly bots stand around doing nothing at all whilst miles from the objective, so I suppose that counts as variance

The bots on the attacking team always ramp up their efforts in a final "panic" mode at the last 2 minutes.

It's still possible to hold them off, but it gets MUCH harder at that point.

Your team does it on offense as well - they get smarter, more aggressive, and more accurate when the timer runs down.

Human players often do it too - moreso when they're getting close to achieving an objective at that point.

The AI fix that happened over the weekend on PS3 seems to have reduced how obvious a shift this is, though - makes them feel more like they're just pushing harder than like the whole enemy team got swapped out for a hacker clan.

I love all the heavy bots, but I can't remember their names... I keep buffing them and following them when I'm a support class.

Heres the deal with the bots they are all actually pretty horrid at playing the objectives because they all are battling over command posts SMH. Then if you are playing on the hard difficulty they still svck at objectives but they will turn around and one shot you to the face even if you catch them off guard.

Worst bot AI i have seen in on refuel as the resistence. I have actually played TWO seperate games and gotten to the second to last part where you have to deliver the fuel or whatever from the hack box place to the side of the plane. The AI will grab the item before I can and we will make it to the plane and begin spawn r@ping the other team. The guy with the fuel will just be standing there five feet away from the place he has to deliver to and be more focused on the baddies then winning. No amount of shooting him, meleeing him, or nading him will make him deliver the damned objective. Then low and behold I rage for the last ten mins of the game because the dumb bot is just standing there for ten minutes until we lose lol. Thank goodness I was able to rack up a buttload of XP but if I was looking to beat that level to continue in the storyline i woulda been really pissed.
