Fallout: New Vegas' problem

Post » Fri Jul 08, 2011 8:52 am

You guys wouldn't make those sarcastic comments if you played NV.

It was ridiculous how limited you were.

You would have to play thorugh about 50 or so times to get all of these cool endings to stuff. Not to mention the skills they were asking for were completly unreasanable, and required you to focus on only that one skill for the entire time up to the point that you need it.

I played it and liked that aspect of the game. Modern RPGs and, for whatever reason, all TES games lack that type of progression where I get to apply my characters' specialties to cool situations like that of New Vegas. I want to see more of it.

I don't see the way they did skills in FO:NV as a problem. Without cheating, I was able to get all of the pertinent skills high enough to use effectively.

You do know that they made some of the skill challenges artificially high so that they could include those one shot skill magazines in the game, right.

I want that stuff, but although you meant that link to be sarcastic, I'm going to thank you and play it, anyway. I can never turn down a decent flash game. :P

edit: That boss battle was great, but I think I need to play a little Demon's Souls to balance out today's game difficulty meter.

I did play it and it is a superior RPG in every aspect. There were tons more quests with far-reaching consequences, and of course MULTIPLE ENDINGS, something Fallout 3 only pretended to have. And your skills actually mattered more, in that they opened up new possibilities as they grew.

While I support the idea of not all characters being able to do everything, leading to your character simply being unable to do something (e.g. hack a computer or open a lock as in FO:NV) because you didn't have high enough skill, it makes for the whole RPG concept of character skills mattering so much more. Thinking about it it applies to all the skills in some way... In Oblivion once you got to 50 of Blade (Journeyman?) you could do power attacks. If you were low skilled you could still use a sword just not very well. And spells had skill requirements. So I suppose lockpicking and trap disarming should be the same.

But it does annoy me at the same time - having to leave it and come back later, which may or may not happen if I move on and don't remember "Ooh, Level 50 of lockpicking, I must go back to the starting area to open that one container I couldn't!" I do like in Oblivion that my character can have Security at 15 and still open very hard locks if I twitch well enough, but I do admit it that it seems like something of an exploit.

I honestly thnk you are right... They should do the same they did in oblivion where you could advance in a skill just by doing it... That how I advanced in lock picking so easily...

I play Fallout NV everyday.

And no, not really, you just need to know how to distribute them wisely.

This exactly. NV is far better than both Oblivion and FO3 and a true sequel to the originals while keeping and refining on the gameplay mechanics of 3. And one of its best parts was the fact that you had specialized characters; if you want to play a game where you can do everything in one play through, play CoD but leave that out of fallout.

even if they do have New Vegas style skill checks it will probably be nothing like the insane level 100 skill checks you face nearing the end of the game.

New Vegas's biggest problem is the set levels of it's enemies instead of having some form of Level Scaling, not the ability to not do everything which you still ironically can do once the DLC's are released. Skyrim will be fine, I don't really have a problem being locked out of stuff due to decisons that I've made as long as I can be in both the Thieves Guild and (whenever Beth confirms it) The Dark Brotherhood.
