The Fanfic Index.

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:41 pm

Hello folks. I had the idea to post this thread after thinking about some of the fantastic fanfics that I have read on these forums since I joined back in november. There were great ones that I read at the time which are in danger of being forgotten simply because they are finished. Unless people are willing to trawl through pages and pages of dead RPs and old threads they might never find some of the superb work that people have done.

What I am asking is that the people on the forums share some of their favorite stories that they have come across by posting a link and a short review of the story. I will then edit this post so that all of the links will be in one place and are easily acessable in one place.

I will only ask you to stick to two rules please.

1: Please don't post multiple reviews for the same story (for example, we all love SentientSurfer's Lords of the Pitt.) One review per fic is enough for this thread.

And

2: Please don't post links to your own work. After all, everybody could be a fantastic author if we got to write our own reviews.

Edit: After following Blackhand's link I will start a second index for RP's. Please only link exceptionally sucessful of well written RPs for this. And please follow the same two rules as for fanfics.

The fanfic index.

I'll start us off then.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164831-the-unwelcome/ By Skirt with a Weapon.

This is only a short story, all one post actually. But is fantastically atmospheric and well worth a read.

What awaits Lloyd and Alisha as they venture into the deapths of the Dunwich building?

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/892321-vault-99-landfall/http://, while not a fanfiction, I feel this really deserves a spot up here. If memory serves correct, it was the first RP on the Fallout Fan-Fiction forum that was very successful, or one of the first anyways.

It makes a nice read as well and is a interesting way to think about how far we have come since the release of Fallout 3.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1145934-the-gem-of-the-mojave/ is one of my most loved fan fics

It tells the story of Colonel Martyr's F:NV character after the 2nd battle for the hoover dam.

The first fanfic I ever read on this forum was http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1153828-the-sound-of-silence/ by thekettleison. This fanfic, though unfinished, was really the reason I started reading other fics and writing and posting my own. The Sound of Silence is a compelling, and tragic, story about David Culver, left behind in a cavern just after the bombs fell. Using extremely limited means, and pure human desperation, the man manages to survive, the static of a two-way radio being the only friend he has. Kettle insists he is a poor writer but this story is hard, electronic proof that the man has talent. Edit -- this story is yet unfinished, but definitely a great read.

Everyone is familiar with SentientSurfer's "Pretty Noose", still on the first page here, but he'd been using tribals in Fallout fanfic for a while. One of my favourite fics of his has fallen into forum obscurity, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1073359-satcom-array-nw-05a. It's the story of Adriana, an unlucky woman who fell in with raiders for survival, kidnapped by a tribal shaman on his journey to the SatCom Array to find nirvana. It's shorter than most of his stories, and not as highly polished as his later work, but still quite well written and worth a read.

SentientSurfer's legion RP, follows Centurion Anthony Leethe and Contubernia XXIV as they move across the Mojave on their way to attack Camp Searchlight. It isn't the longest RP I have read or taken part in. But I think that it deserves to be mentioned as it is the only RP that I have seen get all the way to completion.

This is a fantastic idea, Kettle.

But I would definitely have to nominate The Crusader by Wasteland Scholar_4

I'm not too great at summarizing, but, The Crusader is about a young boy named Milton, and his fight for survival as he grows up in the barbaric DC wasteland. He goes through tremendous emotional and physical pain, and the only thing that keeps him going is the will to survive. Definitely one of my favorite fan-fics of all time, I would recommend it to everybody.

Edit: Can we post more than one review of an entirely different Fan-fic? Because there is two I would like to nominate.

The Warren RP: Revived many times and cut the teeth of many current and great Rpers. Sad I never joined. Several threads so I don’t know which to link to. Also a great mini http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1146987-the-warren/ of the same name by Mr. Smiley.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1155863-she-walks-outside-the-vault/: Very well written, visceral, and composed. My favorite story by Skirt.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122233-return-to-vegas/page__p__16507975__fromsearch__1#entry16507975 by Goris the Scholar. A good writer and so creative. Narrated by a talking deathclaw. Part of an anthology including, Of Your Shadows, Fallout Folktales, and Rites of Hecate (unfinished. Come back Goris!)

And Sound of Silence by Kettle for reasons already stated

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1069418-queen-of-the-pitt/

The very first fic that I read, it is a great story of Marie's journey for answers.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1200777-one-woman-one-symbol-one-endless-need-to-run/

Skirt's current fic, an interesting journey of Frieda. A woman unsure about who she is, what she is, or anything other than recent activities.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1191241-exodus/

Kettle's current fic, based several diferrent characters, each having their own perspective of their situations. Though they all seek to reach a ship to Americam unbeknowist to them the States are in as bad, if not worse shape after the bombs.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1197580-its-a-sin-to-tell-a-lie/

I enjoyed this one very much and wish NuclearWonderland would post the next chapter.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1181666-the-cloud/

Another great foc from SentientSurfer, enough said.

Great idea Kettle.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1119658-lamplighters-fate/page__gopid__16459369&#entry16459369

Oddish weaves the story of a lost group of children across the ravaged wasteland in the most interesting, exciting, and breathtaking ways possible. This had to be one of the greatest Fallout Fan-Fics I have ever read, considering many of the current ones bore me after a chapter.

Its truly a spectacular story from beginning to end.

I'd say this should be put in, http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1176996-new-california-dreaming/ by Hotpoint

It follows the adventure of a soldier from the NCR making his way through D.C. trying to track down the Brotherhood, although along the way he meets new people. This tale is set before the events of Fallout 3 and is a very good read.

p.s. someone should do this for the elder scrolls
