Why we can't choose sides

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:08 pm

If the side you join doesn't determine the outcome I see no reason why the player couldn't join either side. The player should not be the centre of the world, not even as a "Dragonborn".

What if you can choose who you want to support, but for instance the rebels will always win. Often one person is not enough to tip the scales in favor of whomever he is supporting. Just like you could play the Germans in Company of Heroes, but even when you beat the German campaign they would still loose the war, even though you did all in your might to stop the allied forces, the odds were just stacked against the Germans.

You are the dragon-born destined to fight and defeat Aludin. If past games are any indication, you can single-handedly fight BOTH sides at once.

IMO new vegas main quest is linear even with the choice to side with any of the 3 factions, or none.. So it all depends on how it is done.

If the rebels win, it's obvious what the next TES game will be.

TESVI: The Empire Strikes Back

Post of the day

Most likely outcome is both sides uniting. But does Dovakhiin have a claim to the throne? Being dragonborn and all?

In the Q&A it was said that the story is rather linear, which means that we probably won't be able to pick sides. Now, yes, I'd love to be able to fight for both the Empire and the rebels, but it's one or the other. Why? Because they can't have you be able to do both, because in the next game (or books, too) they would have to go with just one thing, not both. Think about it like this, if in Oblivion you could join Mankar Camoran and help him take over the world, Skyrim wouldn't be happening. That's something pretty big, it's not like people can just ignore or forget it. Sorry if this has already been brought up before, just a quick thought.

>implying they are the primary part of the mainquest
>implying they aren't separate faction quests
>implying their isnt some totally different world destroying Ragnarok going on in the background and the belligerents in the rebellion/revolution just ignore the huge omfg problem (kind'v like game of thrones).
Lots of implications

A lot of sitting on the fence posts.. however I would like to try simply going against both of them, Rebels obviously don't want a part of the empire, but they don't want anarchy and lawlessness, Empire want Skyrim to stay a part of it (obviously) but they don't want anarchy either. whats stopping me from going all out badass and defeating both sides, with skyrim turning into a wild everyone for themselves area?

well one way they could solve that is making the sides both neutral type

like there is no bad guy and they both fight for what they belive is right and not taking over the world

that way the conflict would stay in skyrim and could then not really affect the other provinces

that is if they base thier next game somewhere else in the empire

Aren't you been lead to your execution at the start by the empire? I not a forgiving person.

Me neither, the empire must die. The Nords of Skyrim will forge their own destiny and not be dragged along by the imperial hand.

I hope that you can choose sides, but I am worried that it will be linear like the quests in Oblivion were.

Go anywhere and do anything....... my [censored]..............and yet I still love :tes:

I made a post a while back about this. I figure you cam probably support either faction but the destination will be the same. Id be extremely upset with the game otherwise.

that would be quite disappointing IMO.

I really hope that either side truly has a chance of winning the war, otherwise it would be somewhat silly.

why is it that some seem to believe the ending for every playthrough absolutely must be the same as whatever Bethesda decides would be the "canon ending"?

Exactly it makes no sense when their own tag line is

Go anwhere, do anything, be who you want to be............. Lore is important but shouldn't ruin the chance of telling a good story by restricting it to 'canon'

I'm not surprised you have to pick one. However, I wish they'd have chosen t he other one. I'm sick to death of the Empire and everything to do with it. And I'm especially sick of the Blades.

You make an excellent point.

Also, if there are going to be a lot of variations from canon in any case, why not the Civil War?

For example, any particular playthrough could result in such scenarios as:

  • the Dragonborn is "a wanted criminal" in each of the Holds controlled by the Empire, yet "adored" or "idolized" in each of the Holds controlled by the Rebels
  • the Dragonborn is married to an important, famous NPC
  • the Dragonborn has never married
  • the Dragonborn has murdered all the advlts in Skyrim, including many famous, important NPCs
  • the Dragonborn has never defeated Alduin
  • the Dragonborn has defeated Alduin

^ THIS.

The Empire, the Rebels, and Alduin can join my side ... or die trying to stop me.

TES is becoming more and more linear...

I'd be fine if they could let you choose to be a rebel, but have the rebels lose anyway. Or vice versa.
