Are TES games worth $60

Post » Sun Jul 10, 2011 9:24 pm

One day I was purchasing a new game and paused to think about why I was spending $60. I thought about all the money spent on gaming and how it could have been saved for a trip to England...... so why was I doing this?? I thought about the developers who I believed were the top of the line of all time and chose three with Bethesda being one of them. There was also the realization that I had been following a list of seven criteria in picking these developers. I will share them and then tell you if I believe TES games are worth $60.

1) I look at several interviews to see how designers respond and where their hearts are coming from. If their hearts are truly into their games and not just selling 10 million copies it shows when the game comes out.
2) I see if a company stands their ground on their beliefs and does not let the gaming industry bully them around.
3) I do not look at graphics. If I’m engrossed in the game and not feeling like I’m wasting time playing something that I want to trade in ......then my gaming tooth has been satisfied! :) . If top notch graphics come with that then it’s an added bonus.
4) I see if a game has any impact on my life. I like to have fun but when a game makes me want to see more of what is out there in life, decide to move to a small town, go to the Grand Canyon, learn about past history, etc...... then I’ve run into a special game.
5) If the game is a mega hit with everyone or a perfect 10 then I don’t include that because it means most likely it was geared towards males or trying to please everyone to sell 10 million! These are obviously fun great games made but to me they have no backbone. That doesn’t mean they can’t be awesome just not special.
6) Was there anything unique brought to this game?
7) Will I think about and want to play this game ten years from now?

I could go through each one and explain how Bethesda meets these and more but I'm sure that's easy to see.
Do I believe TES games are worth $60...... no, I think they are worth more but could not put a price on it. I just look at the time, passion, details, quests, environments, ,,,,,,,etc, and I have a hard time with TES being worth $60 when I am paying the same amount to other companies for games that are shorter, put out in a year, and some are terrible. I love having a game to play that doesn't involve a lot of thinking and is just for fun but I am looking for a lot more in my gaming for the majority of the time and money I spend.

I know you will have different ideas and criteria ,and I just thought I would share my thoughts on this since gaming will become even bigger.

Game On!! ;))

Elder Scrolls games give us hundreds of hours of enjoyment, and are created with an immense amount of detail. They also always feel very "welcoming", if you get what I mean, but there are tons of other games out there that I'm put off by because they seem too... I don't know how to put it, but "cold" and "lifeless"?

Either way, I think TES games are the only ones (among a few others) that are worth $60. There are many many games that companies are shoveling out yearly, those are the games I think should only be sold for $20 to $30.

Since games are an entertainment media, comparatively feature films go for what $10 (never mind the the other $15 for popcorn, soda, and junior mints)? DVD or Blu ray $20? Two hours at most of "passive" entertainment there. $20 - $60 for active entertainment, and in the case of TES hundreds of hours of entertainment? I think the "time to dime" ratio wins out by a landslide with video game prices. Besides, I would much more prefer to give my money to BGS than Hollywood. More talent there I would like to keep employed...
